Lenovo X61 Tablet PCs - 22% Off

- Rob Bushway

Thanks to WhatIsNew.com, I just noticed that Lenovo is running a special 22% off their X61 Tablet PCs, along with free shipping. Head over there if you are looking to save a few bucks on a great Tablet PC.

The sale expires April 21, but knowing Lenovo, I'm sure they will be following up with some other sales in the near future.

I just hope you don't need Lenovo Support. After 7 months and a total of over 30 hours on the phone trying to resolve out-of-the box problems from when the X61 was new, I've now got IBM Support (who administers Lenovo support) saying I need to talk to Lenovo for a replacement, and Lenovo saying I need to go back and continue talking to Support (IBM). I'm in the process of getting an HP, and am putting the Lenovo on the closet shelf. (Well, that was a waste of a lot of time/money!)

In an unrelated problem, it took 3 phone calls and conversations with 9 (count them, nine!) people over the course of 3-1/2 hours on the phone to replace a X61 power supply that failed. (Really, how hard can that be??) Had I known that up front, I just would have purchased one and saved myself all the wasted time. (After all that, they shipped it in 2 days, so that was good - I'm really trying to find the positive, but Lenovo Support tends to sour me on everything Lenovo!)

Hey JakeTech good luck with that HP you're getting. I sent a laptop into HP for warranty work (I suspected a bad motherboard) and after four delay notices I just received an email today that it's shipping back to me. Two months after they said it would and that's after a two week delay for them to mail me out a box to send it to them. I started the process the day after the Super Bowl. It don't think it would have been as aggravating if they hadn't promised it back in a week. What a joke!

I think quality customer service is a thing of the past regardless of manufacturer.

Eric, thanks for the feedback - and I think you nailed it - quality service has become a thing of the past. In years past, I have both worked for and owned resellers that sold HP and Lenovo product. I can't believe how times have changed (and not for the better). Now as a consultant, I just can't devote any more wasted time to this total incompetance - it just costs me too much money due to unbillable hours spent trying to resolve these problems. While I have never experienced any problems with HP (and I've owned a lot of HP product), your comment does not surprise me. Irregardless of who it is, any manufacturer who poses the level of problems we've experienced out to be ashamed! This is no way for them to run a business - even in a cost competitive market.

My problem now is that I can't find any Lenovo dealer who can help me (every one I've talked to is having problems with Lenovo as well), but I know several HP dealers who have high-level access to HP and can provide me prompt future assistance if I need it. (I have also consulted to some HP marketing managers in the past, so I have these HP contacts available as well.)

It's a sad state of affairs. It makes one wonder where this will end!
