Looking for The Best Handwriting Reco Results?

- Rob Bushway

image We all know that one of the best reasons to puchase / upgrade to Vista is the much improved Tablet PC experience. During our meetings with Windows Tablet PC reco team this past week, the issue of getting the best results from recognition came up.

What they are observing is that new users think printed script will give them the best results. In fact, the opposite is true. To get the best handwriting recognition results, write in cursive. This is because the recognizer sees the letters as a continuous block rather than individual blocks. When seen as a continuous block, the recognizer does a better job of narrowing down the possibilities.

In addition to writing in cursive, turn on the personalized recognizer and Use Automatic Learning.

That's a great theory, but the truth is that I haven't written in cursive in about 20 years...because my cursive is illegible even to me. My print does tend to run together a bit, especially when I write fast, but it's still decidedly "print" rather than "cursive" in terms of letter forms.

That said, even untrained, Vista was giving me about 85% accuracy on recognition, and it's gotten steadily better in the two months since I got my tablet (Toshiba M700), because I do have the automatic learning and personalized recognizer turned on. The biggest issue it had was with my capital E, which it kept rendering as TI or I. I went into the trainer and focused it on a couple of words I commonly use that have a capital E (Engineer used as a title, for example) and it seems to have worked.

I've found this to be true. Unfortunately writing in cursive makes it harder for me to reco it.

I've been dual booting Vista and XP on my m200 and I have to say that even after training Vista still makes the same mistakes, with common words (the, I, I've etc), as XP does. That was the only reason I was sticking with Vista, the supposed better recognition. After comparing both OS's on the same computer I have to say XP is the better choice for older hardware.
I have to go now, time to make some oats with peanut butter :)
