Looking at Apple's iPod Touch Launch

- Warner Crocker

Yesterday Apple opened up the world of touch to all of those who use iPods but don’t want an iPhone by adding the iPod Touch to their new and refreshed iPod lineup. The iPod Touch is essentially an iPhone without the phone. While I personally think it is good news that more and more users will be using touch as a method of interaction, the real news in yesterday’s announcement was about WiFi. In Steve Jobs’ quest to conquer the world (Dave Winer says that it is Steve Jobs’ world we just live in it) Apple also introduced the iTunes WiFi Music Store which will allow iPod Touch and iPhone users to purchase songs over WiFi. While the music you purchase will eventually sync back to your PC when you dock up, the fact that this now breaks the “have to sync to your computer mode” is a big step for those who like their mobile entertainment on the go. From early reads, it doesn’t look absolutely perfect and seamless yet, but I think Apple has taken a giant step here, and in one move, fired a really loud shot across the respective bows of Microsoft, Hollywood, and the Telcos.

Some other interesting commentary from some UMPC bloggers on the Apple news:

  • Chippy wonders if he should add the iPod Touch to his sub-UMPC list?
  • Toughtfix takes on Apple’s advertising and thinks it is misrepresenting some of the facts.

I'm not sure which is more interesting, the new phone-less iPhone or the square iPod.
The comics seem to like the square one better:

By the way, Apple decides to slash its price on IPhone. Perhaps it is a good time for you to buy one as well ? :) My brother has informed me the recent IPhone has performed much better than its first launches such as battery issue, etc.

I've had my iPhone here in Australia and I have not been using it as a phone. Even at $600, I feel like it is the best device I've ever used. Virtually indestructable, amazing battery life, incredible usability with the browser and the ipod features.

I couldn't be happier with it! If apple brings out a mac tablet, I'll buy it in a heart beat. They truly understand touch based interfaces.

As WiFi continues to blanket the world, there is a part of me wondering iif it's time to dump the Treo and buy an iPod touch with the money I wouldn't have to spend on Sprint's data plan. If the touch is as hackable as the iPhone, I might be sold. Then again, there's that silly virtual keyboard...
