Microsoft Eases Restrictions For XP and ULCPCs

- Rob Bushway

Looks like Microsoft is listening to feedback regarding XP and ULCPCs, allowing XP Home to be installed on devices up to 14.1" and those sporting touch screens. This is a change from their previous policy of not allowing touch screens, and limiting the screens to 10.2 inches. They also increased the diskspace requirement from 80 gb to 160 gb. The June 30 XP deadline for other devices still stands, though.

Kudos to Microsoft. Now, if we can just get them to widen that new policy to screens smaller than 21" and active, touch, and normal, then we'll all be happy :-)

I keep missing all the little things about Vista that you get used to and aren't there in XP, like the superior search capability (which I LOVE in Vista as it suits my messy way of working). I agree though, XP does work better on these lower powered devices.

It's good to see that Microsoft is listening, that's what every company should do, listen to what their customers want. Yes XP works better on low end devices, but I would like to see a ULPC for Windows Vista too.

Hm, I have a 24" secondary screen...
But then again, I'm happy with Vista on the 17" HP laptop where it is a secondary screen off.

We were very pleased to see that mobile computers with touch screens were added to the list of devices that could continue shipping with XP Home. Last week, I wrote a letter to my account manager at Microsoft thanking her support and for voicing our touch screen concerns up the Microsoft flagpole.

However...

This XP Home is not the right solution for our Sahara Slate PC and eo UMPC lines because XP Home is non-networkable and the majority of our sales are to enterprise customers who rely on a network.
