Miss Those Buttons On Your Pen?

- Rob Bushway

IntelliScroller Ken Hinckley One of the things people struggle with when moving to a pen-based system is the lack of buttons on the pen for Ctrl, Alt, etc. Well, Ken Hinckley has come up with an interesting, and quite amusing, solution, something he calls the IntelliScroller. The more I think about it, he might be on to something, here.

Better get those Post-It notes ready.....

It's a good simple hack, but personally I would pick up a gaming keypad, like the Belkin Nostromo, to do this. It's already designed to do these things and can also execute commands like cut, copy, and paste.

Better yet, get a Wacom 12WX and use the ExpressKeys. :-)

This is genius. I've been looking to re-map the bezel buttons on my x60 and x61. I guess the old mouse does have some life left in it.

@ Sumocat: Great tip! I don't follow all the whacky input devices out there as closely as I used to. I should definitely get one of those to try out! The main advantage of this thing is that I can pull the post-it note off of the intellieye tracker if I forget to bring a mouse and I need one (as I did the other day :-)

@ Sierra: Yeah, the Wacom 12" display tablet would be really nice to have. Especially if that OQO Model 02 was part of the package. I haven't found the equivalent buttons on my 21" Wacom useful, because I like to use it in Portrait and they are set up for using it in Landscape. When I use it in drafting board mode in the Portrait orientation, my hand always hits the touch-strip scroller or buttons by accident and I had to disable them. I can see them being a lot more useful on the smaller Wacom though, especially if you use it in Landscape.

Orange guava still sells inkable keys, which works really well.No hardware to carry.

@ Ken: Here's another tip - If you can't follow the whole field of alternate input devices, just follow ThinkGeek. They have the hook-up for stuff like this. If I had a fat gift certificate to their site, there'd be a gaming keypad, big USB knob, retro Bluetooth handset, and USB self-destruct switch on my desk right now.
