MobileDemand xTablet Screens Compared

- Rob Bushway

A lot of readers like to know how different screen technologies work indoors and out.

In this video from MobileDemand, they compare their xView screen to their standard display.

Here are the show notes from MobileDemand's video:

This video demonstrates the difference in direct sunlight and indoors between the standard xTablet Tablet PC display and the new xView sunlight readable display.  We show you various angles during a sunny day in direct sunlight.

Note that the displays are nearly equivelent indoors, while the sunlight readable display is far superior in direct sunlight.

We intend to also demonstrate the difference and viewability of each display while inside of a vehicle, such as a beer truck.  MobileDemand has sold thousands of tablets that are used in beer trucks and other vehicles with our standard display and have had great success.  That extra little bit of shade inside the vehicle makes all the difference so the standard display is easily viewable.

The MobileDemand xTablet is your rugged computing solution for the wireless world. What sets the xTablet apart? Three words: POWER, CAPABILITY and RUGGEDNESS. With the industry’s highest processor performance, this resilient tablet PC can be used anywhere from the shop floor, to the delivery truck to the checkout line. And our military-tested ruggedness will meet your business’ performance standards. Features include:

· Integrated numeric keypad

· Bar-code scanner

· Credit card reader

· Sunlight readable display

· Vehicle mounts and accessories are also available to complete your system

The xTablet is a versatile, flexible and powerful performer that is designed with your needs in mind.

The difference is easy:
The indoor uses an Anti Glare film and is matt.
The outdoor uses an Anti Reflective film and is clear but "glossy"
Same technique the Fujitsu T2010 displays use.

But the xView display is not really sunlight readable. They should have used a transreflective display instead or a brighter backlit.

Notice how white the case surround becomes when X-View screen is zoomed to dominate the video's framing, an affect from the auto-exposure of videocamera brightening up the dark LCD now dominating the frame. That charcoal-grey housing over-exposed to nearly white makes suspect how much brighter the LCD looks as zoomed into fully. As the camera next zooms out showing the whitened case edges first, then pulled fully back as tablet case rendered true dark grey, the X-View LCD also then barely could be seen.

Such sunlight tests are very difficult to do at all, improved screens hard to capture, but this demonstration video was made misleading repeatedly fast-panning closeups on auto-exposure ruining all objectivity.

For mil-spec at breath-taking prices, it can't possibly be sales material.

Thank you for your comments. Via video and other methods on the blogosphere, we at MobileDemand strive to demonstrate our products features and show the benefits.

This video demonstrating the xView sunlight viewable display is our attempt at showing the difference between our standard display and the xView display in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Many of our customers require the display to be sharp and bright in both indoors and out - which is why we have chosen to enhance transmissive display technologies for outdoor viewability rather than transflective technology that is not well performing inside. You may see that most companies in the Tablet PC / Rugged space who offer outdoor viewability in their LCDs will be using transmissive LCDs specificaly enhanced for outdoor use.

Of course video - or any image capture technology like photography - is going to be difficult to really demonstrate the true difference that the eye can pick up and what the brain interprets. Seeing the video and seeing the tablets in real life - we believe the video actually does NOT show the true difference as much justice as it should in favor of the xView, but goes far enough to show there is a significant difference.

As you mention, the auto exposure and other auto adjustments made by our video camera makes the clarity change after panning in, out, left, right, etc. That is why we tried to show side by side and DO the zooming, left and right so that the camera treats each tablet's screen the same, and shows the camera CAN show the clarity MUCH better on the xView screen.

I can understand why people choose not to believe what you see on the Net. We advise your comments relating to this video made misleading is not the case. The attempt is to show side-by-side comparison, allowing the camera to auto adjust as best it can on each screen in the same conditions.

Lastly, and we should also have noted this in the original posts, independent reviewers have raved about the difference and exceptional sunlight viewability of our xTablet with xView.

Linda Epstein, TabletPC2.com: "The Color TFT Digitizer & Passive Touch Screen with the xView Sunlight Readable option is a dream come true for those who need or want to be able to use there Table PC outside in full sunlight. In the previous post, our customers who have purchased xTablet units with the xView display are very happy with the sunlight viewability.
