More EverNote Notes

- Warner Crocker

Evernotebeta1The InkShow review of EverNote that I posted yesterday is getting quite a bit of attention (I hope you watch it. This software is a real game changer.) and I’ll be blogging much more on this soon. A couple of things to quickly update on though.

  1. The public beta was scheduled for March 25, but has been pushed back a bit because the private beta has been very successful since it was extended to quite a few folks and the EverNote team wants to make sure they are ready to go when they publicly launch.
  2. If you’re looking for an invite to the private beta, I have a few available at the moment so leave a comment on this post. First come, first serve. We’re also getting more to pass out shortly.
  3. EverNote CEO Phil Libin has sent me a wave of information that I’ll be posting up soon, but one thing I wanted to comment on right away. I mentioned in the review that I could not operate EverNote on the iPod Touch. I get an message saying the browser isn’t supported. Intriguingly, Phil notes that he can use it on his iPhone. I didn’t realize that there were differences between those two browsers, but I guess there are.

Warner - Does this beta support Firefox 3 ?
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 8:32:36 AM (Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00)
the beta is working with Firefox 3, but with an obligatory warning that they are still working on it and that it might run a little funky.

I'd love an invite - would love to get some Evernote stuff going on Tablet Tips when its released.

Many thanks, got it and it's working well. But it's not quite the revelation/revolution some think... I've been using Cynapse SyncNotes for ages, synchronising across desktop (WinXP), UMPC (WinXP tablet) and HTC Advantage (WinMob5). Of course SyncNotes can't do anything like the job of Evernote... but in a limited way it's been incredibly useful and user friendly. Phil :-)

It looks like you're loaded up with requests already, but I'd happily use an invite too if you've got enough.

The new version is cool, but I hope it catches up to version 2.x soon. I use Templates and Check boxes pretty extensively in the other version.

Does it also run on other mobile OS such as Symbian?

Personally, I tried the beta and didn't find it particularly useful. I guess if people envision it as a searchable shoebox for information, it can work, but personally, I prefer OneNote. It gives me the shoebox approach if I want it (unfiled Notes), but the tabs and pages gives me the organization I need for my purposes. Intelligent network syncing plus OneNote mobile and the copy to mobile PowerToy gives me everything I saw that was useful in Evernote with the exception of "email to". However, with OneNote mobile on my phone, that's unlikely to be much of an issue.

Certainly, I'm not disparaging Evernote; I'm sure it's a godsend for some people. Personally, I'm just looking for more structure, so if you try Evernote and feel it is just a big searchable, taggable pile and you want more structure, take a look at OneNote. Evernote is brilliant as a place to put everything, but without the structure, I may not remember I put it there. :-) So horses for courses; I don't see it as a particular game-changer. Like every piece of software, for some people yes, for others no.

I'm still not sure about the pocket pc version I wish you could view and update notes before uploading. I reason is, let say someone gives you a phone number to call, you jot it down and head on your way. Then the guy says "I forgot to give you the extension" now you have two notes one with the number and the other with the extension. Or maybe you loose signal and just want to view a note, you can't without uploading and a connection (still that cloud problem). If they would add a way to review and update notes like the Technology Preview of EverNote for mobile devices I think it would be a winner.

Also I have 10 invites if anyone wants them.
Mike
