More on the Acer Acquistion of Gateway

- Warner Crocker

Interesting stuff. Acer acquires Gateway for $710 Million. Interestingly enough Gateway also has a right of first refusal to purchase Packard Bell. So, Acer could in essence end up owning both Gateway and Packard Bell. Like others I wonder what this all means for mobile users. In looking at some of the information on the deal from Gateway’s site (here’s the link) this came up on one of the slides. Note the UMPC.

This is horrible! I purchased a gateway because my mom purchased an acer and has so much trouble with it. She has sent it back 7 times in the past year and acer does not have a "lemon policy" so they've never just replaced it. We're both teachers and use our tablets everyday so it affects us when we don't have our tablets. If I could discourage ANYONE from getting an acer I would because their service is HORRIBLE. I hope I don't get the same service now that gateway was bought by acer! This is so upsetting.

I never knew Gateway was associated with emachines, which I think are the worst. A friend had one, a P4 2.5 gig with a 250 watt power supply. When the power supply went it took the motherboard and CPU with it, in less than a year.
