New Videos from Tony Buzan on MindMapping

- Warner Crocker

We’ve linked to Tony Buzan’s iMindMap software and videos on mind mapping before. Mr. Buzan has published some new videos and articles that might be worth a look if you are just starting to explore mind mapping. The articles lay out the principals of mind mapping and the videos do the same but from obviously a more visual approach.

After we first linked to iMindMap several users here gave it a try, as did I. For what it is worth on a Tablet PC, I prefer using MindJet’s MindManager. MindManager works much more intuitively with a Tablet PC and Inking in my opinion. But remember there are different strokes for different folks, so you might want to give iMindMap a try. There is a 30 day free trial for you to give it a go.

Thanks for that Warner, I always enjoy hearing Tony Buzan speak; after all he did a great deal to develop the concept.

I immediately downloaded the Trial when I read about iMindmap the other day ...and well, too bad it only has a trial period of 7 days!!!

Today I wrote a feedback to their site and just want to quote some of it:

---------------
... my first impression: WOW! A true "old school" mindmapping software!
I feel free again like in the days of Mindmanager 4 or 2000, but even more so with the freeform support for Tablet PC users! The whole look and feel is awsome, as well as litterally *drawing* a mindmap again.

BUT - and yes, there is a "but", as marvellous as the tablet mode is in terms of drawing the map, as bad is it in the area of text input with a tablet PC (especially a pure slate):
There's no way to automatically open the TIP, neither automatically nor manually.

So I have to relay on the keyboard again for text input.
Well, there's still one way to use the TIP though by opening it via gesture or docking it, but this takes too much space on the screen all the time (as it would be a pain to close and open it again and again).

So my first and most important impression in terms of perfecting iMindMap is some feature to write down the text input with the pen just besides the branches, either like in MindManager with a "scratchfield" that opens automatically when you create a new branch, or in a more unique way where you could just write beside the new branch and the programm recognizes the text by itself (maybe with the option to either convert to text or just recognize in the background like OneNote and leave the handwritten text visually as it is).

The most simple way of course would be the automatical trigger of the TIP when hovering the pen over the "normal" input field of iMindMap, as it is in almost all other applications and even windows itself.
---------------

So far with my first impressions; let's see what I can do during the rest of the testing period :-)

Question is - will iMindMap be available for education (school, teachers, students) for a special prize?
As much as I love the interface, without using a tablet it will still be hard for iMindMap to beat ol' MindManager Smart when it comes to the prize tag, and the "big" one has still a LOT more of functionality for the money :-(

I'll definitely watch how iMindMap will devellop in the future - I see a BIG potential.

Andy
