OQO Model 02 - An Office in Your Pocket?

- Rob Bushway

I wouldn't classify the OQO Model 02 Tablet PC as pocketable, but it is one of the most complete and most productive ultra-mobile devices I've ever used. GCN.com seems to agree.

They take a good look at the Model 02 from a productive standpoint as well. Good read.

The new OQO model 02 ultramobile PC would look at home in a piano bar. We almost thought we heard jazz wafting out of the box when we opened it.

This model, the successor to the model 01+, has had a major design overhaul. The company traded in the gunmetal-gray color for black, and also rounded the left and right sides for a sleek, sophisticated look. Even the air vents look cool: Instead of a standard mesh grate, the vent covers are circles of varying sizes, making them look futuristic.

The OQO is special because it’s a tiny, one-pound device that is nevertheless a full-featured PC, running full versions of Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. That differentiates it from similar-sized portable computers on the market, which generally run abbreviated operating systems and don’t contain all of the features of a PC or laptop.

So a computer that I often put in my pocket, when it isn't hanging from my belt, isn't pocketable?

Depends on your pockets :-)

I don't consider it a pocketable device for pants pockets. It is pocketable for a jacket, though.

I carry mine around in my front pants' pocket. Fits just fine with the standard battery, the extended battery is a bit heavy though.

I also pocket the device - front pants pocket, blazer breast pocket, jacket pocket, sometimes even shirt pocket ...

Here in the great NorthWest I keep my OQO 02 close to my heart, in my front shirt pocket. I do have to be particular with what shirt I wear, typically worn as an overshirt with a T shirt underneath (been wearing layers like this for years before it became in style). Only problem is even at 1 lb. it tends to sag the shirt to one side so I'm consious of keeping it straight. Otherwise, I shoot from the hip.

Dennis, tell the engineers to not make it any bigger or heavier, but it would be nice to lighten it a bit & a little thinner without reducing performance & functionality.
