OQO Model 02 Facing Challenges from New Entries

- Rob Bushway

OQO page 1-75-pct OQO has been the model of what a productive mobile pc should be: small, light, connected, reasonably fast, and inconspicuous. Now, they are facing some heady challenges from the likes of HP, Fujitsu, and Asus.

The San Francisco Chronicle has a great article on OQO, how they started, and the new competitors on the block. Knowing OQO, I think they are up for it. It is very good reading for those interested in the ultra-mobile space.

Along those lines, Ken Hinckley got his Model 02 in and is starting to do some very interesting work with it with InkSeine. He immediately compared it to his Moleskine, and created a page to give it that "personal" flavor.

I have to tell you, I really miss my Model 02. It was the best ultra-portable I've ever used. I think I might be up for another one when OQO refreshes their line. Be sure to check out OQO's Outlet Store for some aggressive prices starting at $999.

Unfortunately, if you read oqotalk.com , oqo has lots of reliability issues, that are turning customers away, especially overseas where they just don't support the model.

By the very nature of forums, you'll hear more of the problems than the successes. Oqotalk also has a lot of loyal fans and a pretty cool CEO who actually answers posts and is open to advice from customers (in fact he just posted a response to the problems with international repairs). What they're doing is working as a small company that can pay attention to the details and listen to the customers. There are growing pains but I think they're definitely working hard and they have a great product.

There's no denying the reliability problems, most of the active OQOTalk members have at least 1 rma under their belt with a few having over half a dozen. Then there are major reviewers like Hugo Ortega whom had to rma his OQO 3 times in total.

Anyway, OQO at least got the design right. No one can deny that a fair chunk of it's appeal is it's sexy appearance. I can also give major kudos for the keyboard which is easy to thumb type on.

Of course people are going to have reliability problems, it's the nature of technology. I probably shouldn't be saying this, as my unit is almost out of warranty, but, apart from the problem with the antenna cover cracking, my unit has worked flawlessly. If they put an OS on there that wasn't so annoying to use, it would be almost perfect for its intended use. As Tekara said, the keyboard is superb. And yes, you can write a novel on it.

Strange. I was never aware that the OQO model 2 had a touchscreen!!! Nowhere in the specs either. Ik wonder if Inkseine can run on a windows mobile 6.1 phone. That's cool!

The OQO doesn't have a touchscreen (but does have active digitizer like most tablet PC's). For whatever it works mine works great - no problems.

And, No, InkSeine will not run on Windows Mobile because none of the Tablet PC API's for handwriting recognition, drawing ink strokes, etc. are available on that platform.

practically every challenger to the OQO model 02/e2 falls short in one way or another.

Specifically in at least one of the dimensions regarding width by length by thickness. If it is not fully pocketable, and I mean shirt front pocket close to the heart full blown Windows Vista or XP Tablet capable, not even in the same class as the OQO.

Yes OQO is still working on improvement of their service and product but after a year of ownership I'm very satisfied with my 1st gen model 02 which has become invaluable with both my personal & professional lifestyle.

And I don't consider MID's, prototypes, or only available in some asian country a factor until a product is available for most all of us to actually get our hands on within 6 weeks after it is ordered and it is really capable of running most any Windows software I choose to install & use on it.

I don't see any competition for the OQO 2. Where is there another pocketable (in the jacket, anyway) device with an active digitizer and full power for applications? Now if they could only make it a dual mode, it would be incredible!
