OQO Model 02 Tablet PC available for ordering

- Rob Bushway

OQO has a new Tablet PC - Model 02 and Dynamism already has it available for order.

I got to play with it very shortly at the Microsoft Partner Pavillion on Sunday, and the keyboard is much better than the Model 01. The keys are not flush and are back lit. In addition, it now features a 1.5ghz processor from Via. Pricing seems a little steep at $2149 for the Tablet Edition, and unfortunately, the screen is still not touch enabled, but the integrated WWAN from Sprint, and the six hour extended battery are much welcome features. Looks like they listened to a lot of customer feedback.

We have an interview with Bob Rosin, OQO's CEO, on Monday mornng to go over the OQO in more detail and will post a video of that interview on Monday night, but here are some specs from Dynamism on the Model 02 from OQO.

Prices start at $1599 for XP Home Edition. Tablet Edition prices start at $2149.

Rather pricey for what, according to the specs, is a common UMPC. The VIA chips can barely handle Vista, let alone Aero Glass.

Yeah, they really need to get the price down below $1000.

I am dissapointed that the general consensus is that it will be slow with vista installed

Performance per se is not the issue here...it's what you get for that price. This new OQO does not distinguish itself from most of the UMPCs already out for forthcoming at half the cost except for the smaller size, optional built-in EVDO (if you use Verizon/Sprint), and a slide out keyboard. Maybe that is worth a thousand dollars more. But you'll get a slightly better processor, built-in camera and HSDPA (as an alternative to EVDO) in the Sony UX which is nearly the same size, a 1024 monitor (which makes it have no software compatibily issues), and which has also has a slide keyboard for about the same price. Value consciousness suggests the Sony is the better deal.
