As far as I can tell, it is completely on the up and up, and a Microsoft run program.

Hmmmm, why does the clock reset when I refresh the page? It ran down to zero and said it is available, but I didn't get an email.

I refreshed the page, and now, it is counting down 2+hours, again.

    What's up, Rob?

The Ultimate Steal is the deal my employer (a University) has with Microsoft. OneNote 2007 for students, faculty, or staff for $15.90! OneNote 2003 for $16.48 -- some subtle hinting going on here?

    From the press release:

The majority of higher education students in the countries where the promotion is offered should be eligible. To be considered eligible, a student must be actively enrolled at an educational institution and hold a valid e-mail address at that institution. If a student’s e-mail address can’t be verified, they can provide additional information to us so we can work on adding them in the near future.

    doesn't look like teachers qualify...

There is some diabolical genius from Microsoft in this:
    1. $60 is something student will bite at, rather than trying to pirate the software (or more likely just stay with an older version of Word (which are also easier to pirate)
    2. Professors will start getting documents to grade (many classes now let you submit online) in the Word 2007 format, which might just force them to upgrade sooner and thus propagate Office 2007 quicker than it's current pace.

Yeah, but the educational discounts already bring microsoft software down to around that 60$ level, so I don't think it really does that.

If this has an academic license(full retail version with restricted agreement), you are not legally entitled to use the software after leaving school. For the law abiding among us, that is a gotcha.

If this is just discounted software(the way it should be), then that is different; but I don't think MSFT has become that nice.

OpenOffice is a great alternative and free.

    Also professors decide format.
