PDF Annotator 2.0 Beta Now Available

- Rob Bushway

image All I have to say is "Wow!"

I've been using a pre-beta release of Grahl Software's PDF Annotator 2.0 and I am thoroughly impressed. Oliver has done a remarkable job addressing many issues and feature requests for this new release. If you'd like to try it out, head over to this beta download site and give it a whirl. By the way, be sure to submit your feedback.

I'll have an InkShow coming out on Thursday going over all the new features such as: Page Manager, Bookmark Manager, Auto Smooth which helps with highlighting, Stamps, Favorites ( reusable ink ), Toolbox, enhanced Text Box Styles, enhanced Full Screen Mode, enhanced Text Search, Page Navigation, enhanced Menu and Toolbar, and faster rendering.

Here are some notes on using PDF Annotator 2 Beta with PDF Annotator 1, along with upgrade / licensing:

Installing side by side with PDF Annotator 1

This version can be installed side-by-side with PDF Annotator 1 by selecting a different installation folder.

PDF Annotator 2 will import settings from your existing PDF Annotator 1 installation, but will not override any PDF Annotator 1 settings. Your PDF Annotator 1 should keep working as before after installing this version.

Your existing desktop shortcut and start menu program group will point to this version after installation. Rename them to "PDF Annotator 1" before continuing this installation, if you want to keep them. Also, only one of both versions can be made default viewer for PDF documents and associated on the context menu.

Licensing and Upgrade

This beta version will work with any PDF Annotator 1 unlock key.

The final PDF Annotator 2 release will not work anymore with a PDF Annotator 1 key.

Upgrade pricing and new regular prices will be announced with the availability of the final version.

All licenses purchased after December 31, 2007 will receive a free upgrade to PDF Annotator 2 once the final release is available.

This includes all purchases before final release of PDF Annotator 2 (at current PDF Annotator 1 prices)!

I have been doing a trial of Bluebeam mainly because I couldn't enter type text in fields on PDF's with PDF Annotator. Will I be able to do that in 2.0?

Note that even if you have a licensed version 1 that this trial puts an obnoxious header on every page you create with version 2. I uninstalled it right away for that reason as it cost me quite some time in lost effort I had to discard. I love this program too but am not happy with this watermark.

I was going to try this out but the watermark totally turned me off. If Im using my V1 key, this should be disabled.

Now the question becomes Blubeam or PDFA2......

Thanks everybody for giving our beta a try! To answer some of your questions above:

If you have a v1 key and did install v2 into a different directory as suggested, you'll have to enter your v1 license key again in v2 to get rid of all trial reminders. Sorry that this was not mentioned in the remarks, I'll add it. If you can't find your key, drop me a message at support_en AT grahl-software.com and I'll send you a new key asap.

Regarding form filling, this has not yet been addressed, but is still on our todo for future updates. What you can do though, is to remove all form fields (you'll be asked when you open a form) and type or write into the form field's places.

Dear Oliver.

I installed my version 2.0 yesterday as adviced. Today I tried to start up again but only the 1.0 version seems to work now. What can I do to fix this problem?
