Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC Specs and Pricing

- Rob Bushway

Warner posted a link to Samsung's press release regarding the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC. Here are specs, pricing, and anticipated dates for ordering. The introductory model is at $799 ( yes -you read that right ), with native resolution going up to 1024 x 600, LED with 280 nits. In addition the track stick now has mouse functionality. More pictures below ( click to see large scale image ).

Q1 Ultra Brief Overview

The Q1 Ultra advances Samsung’s family of ultra-mobile computing devices, answering the growing demand for companion PCs that offer the power of a desktop or notebook computer but can be accessed anytime and anywhere.

Complete with an integrated split-QWERTY keypad, mouse, and user-defined function keys, the Q1 Ultra UMPC is designed to enhance productivity, ease-of-use and portability in a range of personal and professional scenarios.  With an increased battery life of 4.5 hours coupled with faster speeds, flexibility and mobile functionality, the Q1 Ultra product provides a compelling solution packed into a 1.5 pound package.

The announcement marks one year since Samsung, along with partners Microsoft and Intel, pioneered a new category and form factor of PCs with the introduction of the Q1 UMPC.  The Q1 family delivers full PC capabilities when a desktop computer is not an option and a notebook PC is impractical or simply undesirable.  Through its combination of PC functionality, multimedia versatility and advanced connectivity, the Q1 has become the best selling UMPC in the world.

UPDATE: Added new SKU line, updated pricing, specs received from Samsung. Specs, dates, pricing subject to change, but are the latest as received from Samsung.

UPDATE 2: Updated number of nits. Information from Samsung originally stated 280, but the new official spec sheet states them as 300. Also updated other information in the Entry Level machine against updated specs, among other differences.

Wow..Just Wow. I love how Samsung is releasing a $799 model, and they differences are 600 compared to 800 processor and XP Tablet to Vista.

I just wish they included Vista on the $799.

But still, really nice!

Any idea when you'll be any to pre-order from the stores?

I have another question. Does the Q1 Ultra have a VGA out port on the device itself? In earlier reports, it was reported it did, however, I don't see it mentioned on this page.

I'm guessing you will be able to pre-order at Best Buy, Circuit City CDW, CompUSA, Amazon, NewEgg, Buy.com, Costco within the next day or so. will get back to you on the vga out.

Wow! great news on the price and features.

Anyone know if Ctrl+C/v etc features will still be enable on the split keyboard?

Hopefully indepth reviews won't be too far off.

Now if only I could get tomtom GPS to work on this thing.

I don't see a Ctrl key on the keyboard, but you should be able to map the Ctrl key to the U programmable keys.

In the User Manual, it does show a Ctrl key on the keyboard. It looks like the 2nd key in from the left on the bottom row. :)

The only mistake with the table above is with the brightness of the LCD screen. The table states a 280 nits when it really should read 300 nits (according to Samsung's specification sheet). At first, I believed that Samsung had lowered the nits from the leaked specs, but then realized that it hadn't.

I also would like to see a Q1 Ultra model with 80 GB hard drive but without HSDPA (something in between the Q1U-V and the Q1U-CMW) for $1399.

Thanks for the correct information. I've corrected the NIT information Samsung originally sent us with the updated information from the spec sheet.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but has anyone looked at the FAQ page on the Q1Ultramedia.com website? The specs on the entry level are VERY different than posted. It EXCLUDES the cameras, the fingerprint reader and the SD card slot but does include Vista Home Premium.

Also note that the third model spec (Ultra-V) excludes the fingerprint reader as well.

Looks like more verification of the specs will need to take place over the next few days.

From the FAQ webpage:

• Q1 Ultra-EL – entry level configuration without the integrated cameras, fingerprint reader or SD/MMC enhancement slot. Supports the 600MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 40GB hard disk drive and Windows Vista Home Premium.
• Q1 Ultra-XP – commercial configuration supporting the integrated cameras, fingerprint reader and the SD/MMC enhancement slot. Supports the 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 60GB hard disk drive and Microsoft Windows XP tablet Edition.
• Q1 Ultra-V – primary consumer configuration supporting the integrated cameras and the SD/MMC enhancement slot. The fingerprint reader is not supported. Supports the 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 60GB hard disk drive and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.
• Q1 Ultra-CMV – enhanced consumer & commercial configuration supporting the integrated cameras, fingerprint reader and the SD/MMC enhancement slot. Includes integrated HSDPA cellular modem. Supports the 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 80GB hard disk drive and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

I won't lie. I'm disappointed. But it actually makes sense from a business angle. They normally try to push you up the higher models. Hopefully we'll find out the FAQ page is wrong, but until then.....

Thanks - I just reupdated the table with the updated specs from Samsung. Funny - the specs they sent me on Friday must have changed slightly over the last couple of days.

Monday, May 07, 2007 4:23:25 PM (Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00)
Woops. Didn't see that you had updated the specs on the main article. Sorry about that. These specs are wacky. Now no fingerprint reader on any except the unit with the HSDPA modem? That's what it seems to say at http://www.q1ultramedia.com/pdf/Q1-Ultra-DatasheetL.pdf. Huh?
Stephen Feger
Monday, May 07, 2007 4:29:46 PM (Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00)
Yep, looks like there will need to be some clarification of their website specs. For example, they refer to Genuine Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Tablet Edition. Clearly there is no such thing. They are referring to Windows XP Tablet Edition. The model number itself is Q1U-XP.

Ah, all this excitement over a new device. It is kind of funny. Good to see the enthusiasm for the unit though.

I hope there's an easy way to upgrade the memory. 1GB in Vista is gonna be hell.

Well, it looks like the "Q1 Ultra-V, which launched Monday, will ship to retailers in approximately two weeks"! This time frame was reported by CNET News:

http://news.com.com/Samsung+touts+new%2C+improved+Q1+Ultra/2100-1041_3-6181992.html?tag=st_lh

Great news for all of us who are eagerly awaiting the Q1 Ultra-V!

Personally I can NOT justify a huge extra 50%!! or $400!! between the EL and the V just for 800 MHz instead of 600 and 20 more GB (plus 2 lousy webcams). For me $200 is its true value and is all that it should cost above the EL.

Anybody knows how the 600 MHz McCaslin compares to the 900 MHz Celeron M in terms of speed and battery usage?

Hello,

Apparently, it has not been confirmed by Samsung whether the SSD version will have 32GB of disk-space, or the new 64GB SSD drive. Please take a look at my post in Origami forums, and let us know, on what basis has GBM put the value '32GB' in the table above:

The SSD model information came directly from our contacts with Samsung and their press agency about two or three days before the official announcement.

Companies often change their minds about sku offerings and features, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the SSD disk change from 32 to 64gb.

oh ok, thanks for letting me know : )
