Samsung Q1 Ultra does 2GB

- Hugo Ortega

I’m a geek, I’ve always felt like a geek, and now having a Samsung Q1 Ultra in my hands really reinforces it. She (I know it’s a she) arrived today via FedEX and rather impatiently I tore open the FedEX box and booted her up before the FedEX Man had even left the building. My intentions are to nurture her for a bit less than a week and do whatever it takes to prove, or disprove, myself as a devotee.

At this stage I have no real hang-ups regarding the device so I’m feeling pretty neutral. I neither love nor hate the two cameras; I neither love nor hate the QWERTY keyboard; and I most certainly neither love nor hate the new shape. It will be fun and my intention is to post a video some time in the future regarding my experience.

So with device in hand and time to burn what was a man meant to do on this first date? What else but upgrade her memory of course! Since becoming the proud owner of several 2GB sticks of RAM I decided that our first date would include nothing less than a memory transplant! My motto for the last week has been “I’ve got 2Gig sticks and I’m not afraid to use them!”

So here are the results:

(and yes Dennis...it helps!)

She now has 2038MB RAM

Experience Index: 2.0 before RAM upgrade and 2.0 after upgrade

I'm very happy you got it up to 2GB. I looking forward to this new UMPC but I'm going to hold out for the SSD model. I do have some question?

What type RAM was used to upgrade the Q1 Ultra?

Can you run CrystalMark 2004R2 on it?

Hi Preston,

Here's the funny thing, the RAM is called RAMBO! Becasue it's tough! If you zoom in on the picture you can see. It is DDR2 667 2GB PC-5300 SO DIMM. I will make an effort to run CrystalMark on it with the RAM upgrade and see what we get.

You mention a 2.0 index before and after the memory upgrade. However, that is determined by the lowest score which is the processor. Do you know the individual score for memory before and after? I can see the 4.5 after but what was it before?

Shows how much I thought about my last comment before I posted it. Oops. Dennis, did you take note of the Index before this upgrade? If not I will put the old RAM back in and check over the next few days and get back to this thread. Good call Josh.

It was 2.0 before, but don't remember the memory score. It is in the InkShow I did though ....

I checked my unaltered Q1U and with 1GB it reads an index subscore of 4.5 on memory!???

In fact the only difference in Hugo's 2GB index scores in on grahpics. On mine with 1 GB it is a 2.0 and on Hugo's it is a 3.6.

The memory score is based on the speed of the memory subsystem, not on capacity.

Glad to see it works! I ordered my memory last Wednesday and it should be here today, and hope to have it in the Q1U soon.

What your experience now that there is more memory? Does it seem to run faster? Is this still the Samsung Software load or have you tweaked it yet?

Thanks,
Chris

Hugo, can you provide instructions for opening the Q1U to get at the memory slot? It wasn't apparent to me how to get it open.

@Dennis:

Cheers mate, I'm sure we will all watch the video and see what it was.

@Jim

hi Jim, this is a great observation regarding the Video. Interesting isn't it!?!? Thanks for the original RAM score too - it doesn't add up though???

@yggdrasil

Hi Yggdrasil,

Now that clears it up! Thanks mate.

@Christopher Welle

Hi Chris. Here are my observatiosn so far. The upgrade improves the following: boot up time, shut down time, program launch speeds, multitasking abilities, file transfer abilities...and so on. I am yet to tweak the machine but it definitley improves all of the above, and for me that's more than enough at this stage. You'll never make the Processor any faster but this RAM really helps. I look forward to hearing from you in the future mate regarding your Q1U experience...sounds like your pumped!

@Grandall

Hi Grandall,

Great suggestion! I will psot a video!!!

I am excited over it. See my last post on the tweak thread on Samsung forum.. I'd especially like your reaction to how smooth I am find the physical act of handwriting on it because I know you too love the handwriting.

Experience is based on the lowest single factor (subscore), so currently you're processor-limited to 2.0.
Memory is F-I-N-E at 4.6!

Hugo, can you post some pics of the disassembly procedure for the Q1U?

@Jim:

Hi Jim, it appears that handwriting with the new HID (Human Interface Device) Driver is a much more pleasant experience. I am enjoying it's TIP a lot more than I was on the Q1s prior to this. I will keep you posted though.

@Matt:

Hi Matt, as I stated before the comment was an oversight on my behalf. I am well aware of how the scoring works and that it is a reflection of the lowest denominator. (Josh brought it up too a few comments above this). Thanks mate.

@Jack:

Hi Jack, I will go one better and post a quick video shortly. :-)

Also, that score probably doesn't show how much it does or does not swap/trash the hard drive in use, especially if you load up a few programs. The Q1 Ultra with 2GB... hmm, sounds juicy.

Interesting. Is that a stock 1.8" HD & connector? It might be less expensive to get a SSD from another retailer and install it.
