Something New Coming From Motion Computing

- Rob Bushway

I've been a bit quiet here while I'm away taking care of some family stuff, but wanted to take a few moments to talk about a new Motion Computing Tablet PC I've been thoroughly enjoying this past week. I can't talk much about the details nor post pictures, but this ought to whet your appetite until it is released.

First of all, it is a little larger than the LS800, and is not a replacement for it.  This Tablet PC is targeted to a vertical space ( ie - not a consumer or broad business line product ), which shouldn't come as a surprise. As we've seen, Motion is continuing to target different vertical market segments, and this tablet pc is geared along that effort.

I've been toting it back and forth from my hotel room to the hospital and it is a pure joy to hold, carry, and ink on. It is light and fits perfectly in my Tom Bihn Buzz Bag. It has garnered quite a bit of attention as I've used it in Maggie's hospital room. I brought the TC1100 with me, but have primarily been using this new Tablet PC.

I'll be posting an InkShow video review on the day it is officially announced, and will certainly post more in the coming weeks.

Gotta run - got some inking to do!

Rob, you're such a tease! Lol. Sounds interesting.
Hope Maggie's medical care is going well.

This is torture ... I've been diterhing over what to replace my LS 800 with. I've almost settled on the Fuji P1620, subject to jkOnTheRun James' review after he gets the device any day now. Now this. I'm sure it's a slate (duh). Given your "it is a little larger than the LS800", it sounds like a 10" like their C5 superstar. But the million dollar question: What is its multi-touch capability? N-Trig perhaps? I recall the interview with the Motion exec at the Las Vegas show. I guess this new device is what he was talking about. The suspense is killing me!

I love my LE1700. By far the best and coolest PC I've ever owned. An unexpected benefit is that my handwriting has improved! HA! Went downhill once I started grafitiing on Palm devices...a brand I finally had to give up for an N95... Anyway, Motion puts out some real quality stuff. I haven't and hope never to test it, but the LE1700 seems like its unbreakable.

I've been waiting for James' review as well with all eyes towards the P1620. My M200 has become too heavy to lug around with and so far the P1620 seems like the only decent solution.

I motion could to a 8-10" screen, an active multi-touch screen, fingerprint ID, 2-3MP webcam, and larger SSD options. Of course the wireless keyboard to the slate would be required. (I'm assuming a slate) Of course 2 to 2.5 pounds is the sweet spot, 3 pounds is too much.

Rob, do you have an idea of timeframe?

Well, if it's "not a consumer or broad business line product" that simply means that it's very expensive even for Tablet-PC standards, something like 4000 bucks (which would translate to 5000 Euros).

I am excited, and this is nice.

But what would totally put Motion in the spotlight would be for them to produce something targeted specifically to the consumer market. HP, Toshiba, and Fujitsu have made their pitch. Now, it is time for Motion to make some commotion. :)

Can you tell us the date of the announcement?

"This Tablet PC is targeted to a vertical space ( ie - not a consumer or broad business line product )...." I assume this means that this device is targeted to an industry like real estate or legal, much like the C5 is targeted to the medical profession. Perhaps it is a C5 variant, especially given Motion's apparent success with the C5, notwithstanding they chose a name associated with a high explosive. Still, if it is multi-touch, you don't have to be in the targeted industry to buy it!

"that simply means that it's very expensive even for Tablet-PC standards, something like 4000 bucks (which would translate to 5000 Euros)."

Or it means that it has a silly handle like hte C5.

Maybe it's a rugged tablet pc.

Doug, I suspect the only thing "rugged" will be the price. I hope the target market is legal because then I can use it where I'm network admin. But I suspect it won't be that market because law firms tend to be conservative (to be kind) when it comes to adopting new technology. Another time my guess might have been real estate but with the recent downturn in home sales that wouldn't be good timing for Motion. Wonder which market it will be?

Sorry, guys. I can't talk about the release date or much else at this point. I'll be posting more about it as I'm allowed to - promise.

Rob, understood, NDAs being what they are. But that doesn't stop the rest of us from speculating, right? I understand your position has to be "no comment."

not a bad marketing approach for a new machine. Motion must feel pretty good about chances of success to do a teaser like this.
