TC1100 Tablet PC Hardware Inkshow

- Rob Bushway

In this video review, what we are now officially calling “ Hardware InkShows “, I take a look at the TC1100 Tablet PC. Since its intoduction in November 2002, the TC1x00 has maintained an almost cult-like following due to its design and flexability. The TC1100 has also been a favorite in Hollywood, being featured alot on shows like 24 and Alias. It was a sad day in Tablet Land when HP announced that they were discontinuing the TC1100 in favor of producing “me too” like designs in the TC4x00 series.

In this review, I take a tour of the tablet in keyboard and slate mode, the ports and buttons, the docking station, modular cd drive, protective cover, the built-in legs, the QuickLook utility and other software utilities.

The lighting in this video turned out better than my previous two videos, but I think Dennis and I are going to have to invest in some mini spot-lights to ensure the best lighting possible.

Although the TC1100 has been discontinued by HP, you can still buy it from HP, CDW, and other channels until the inventory has been cleared out.

By the way, I found it really interesting when visiting HP’s site to read how they describe their Tablet PCs: The ultramobile PC that adapts to the way you work. Hmm..I don’t think I would describe the 12” TC4400, the only Tablet PC they produce right now, as an ultramobile pc. They also use a thumbnail picture of the discontinued TC1100 to represent their Tablet PC line. Pretty ironic, huh?

Starting price: $1649

Great InkShow! I have a TC1100 and I don't know what that port between the headphone and mic port is used for. I was hoping you would, ha, I guess it is the final mystery of the TC1100 before its death.

While I have nothing against the tc1100 or any other particular machine for that matter, I don't see why you tc1100 fanboys can't discuss it's demise without taking potshots at the TC4x00 series.
I own a TC4200 and it's a fine piece of kit. Yes, it's a convertible like many others are. On the other hand the tc1100 was just a slate as others are too.
In any event, I am sorry for your loss and generally a fan of your website.
I just wasn't keen on the way the intro for the piece seemed so negative on the TC4x00 line; which, while perhaps not being the best at any particular thing compared to other offerings is never the less a very nice all around machine at a good price point.
I personally chose it over the much loved lenovo due to price and a couple genuine advantages such as MUCH better docking and the availability of upgrades for it's laptop standard hard drive.
I have not been disappointed in the least with my purchase and I'm typing this message on it right now.

Thanks for the site...
Mike

Hello.
The small port between the mic and speaker is the Headphone jack.
Most useful when talking to type, or in any program that requires
you to talk and listen with a headset.

Purchased 2 of them from www.clearanceclub.com for 1299.00 each
(New with 3 year warranty)

Rob, did you mention that the cover flap is only available with the docking station? I've looked at buying several used docks on Ebay, but (imagine) the flap isn't availabe with any of them? I'd love to learn more about how best to aquire one. Thanks.

it is only available with the docking station. Your best bet would be to buy the dock directly from HP - if they still have them. You could also look at cdw.com or any other retailers still selling the tc1100 and see if they have the dock as well
