TabletKiosk issues a recall for the eo

- Rob Bushway

Update: I modified the title of this post to reflect the recall letter that TabletKiosk sent out (see below).

John Tokash posted a letter on his blog from Martin Smekal, CEO of TabletKiosk, regarding the eo battery issue. A letter is being sent out to all eo owners advising them that the fix will involve them sending it in for repair (see below). Here is the letter from Martin as posted on John’s blog:

We will be sending out a notification later today to all recipients of the initial unit. The repair is hardware based and will require the unit being sent back to our offices for update (we have identified a set of defective cords / capacitors on the initial production run causing the high power drain). This repair will also effect the delivery of on-order systems slightly – we have some units that will ship next week that have the new suppliers components installed, and we are working diligently with our supplier to meet current demand, however some orders may be delayed a week or two while we transition to this new source for these components.

On a side note for your information we will also offer a 25% discount off any eo accessory to these first users to try and help compensate for the frustration this issue has caused.

And here is the official letter sent out, as posted on CTitanics blog:

Dear Valued Customer,

At TabletKiosk™, our primary goal is to provide outstanding products and superior service that "exceeds our customers' computing expectations." Guided by this philosophy, we take great effort to ensure that our machines perform exactly as they are promoted.

We recognize that the first shipment of eo™ v7110 was affected by a battery life that did not perform as advertised.

For this reason, we are initiating a voluntary recall of eo™ so that we can replace the defective component to provide you with a better functioning machine.

To expedite the process, please contact TabletKiosk at 310-782-1201 or eoreturns@tabletkiosk.com for return shipping instructions. Upon receiving your eo™ back in our facility, we will modify the hardware and will ship the machine back to you within 72 hours of receipt.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue and hope that you will support our decision to issue this recall. To thank you for your understanding and patience, we are pleased to extend the following offer to all current eo™ owners:

25% off any single eo™ accessory -

  • - Offer good towards any new accessory order placed before July 31, 2006
  • - Offer may be applied to any accessories currently on back-order

With our sincere apologies, thank you for your understanding.

Comon Rob, this is really upsetting. I was one of those who purchased early and an early adopter. BUT why is everyone not calling what this is "RECALL!!!" and wh pays for the shipping? "ME!" Oh yeah I get 25% off an accessory that I WAS NOT GOING TO BUY ANYWAY!

Comon I wish people would call this out for what it is!

Scott:

I believe that is what TabletKiosk calls it in their letter:

For this reason, we are initiating a voluntary recall of eoâ„¢ so that we can replace the defective component to provide you with a better functioning machine.

Have you contacted TabletKiosk about the shipping instructions to find out who pays for shipping?

Hello Scott

Scott, I don't know where you got your information regarding the shipping cost - this is not at all discussed in our letter to users (I have to assume you purchased from one of our resellers, as you are not on our direct sales customer list and therefore you must be taking your information from the letter which has been posted on varies blogs / sites). TabletKiosk will issue a call tag for systems affected by this recall, after a customer has contacted us and a RMA number has been issued - the voluntary recall will not cost the user anything but a short period of time without the system.

Sorry you personally don't find any value in the accessory offer - but we have customers that are interested in the extended life battery, air/car charger or want to upgrade there units and this is a way for us to offer some consideration for this inconvenience.

Martin I bought it directly from you guys! I guess this is the old PR stunt that you will say you dont see me on the list? Interesting this list must not be that big! Either way I am ebaying this boat anchor and not dealing with this headache. You should be clearly posting this information on your website and ALL the blogs like you did when you were ANNOUNCING you had stock!

I am sick and tired of this game! Tablet Kiosk you should be ashamed in rushing this product to market!

Scott,

You must have purchsed under another name or a company name, as I'm unable to find an order for you. Don't understand why you would sell it on e-bay and pay for the additional sales fee's, when you could get all your money back if you returned it directly to us. My assumption is the you feel selling it on e-bay will get you more for this "boat anchor" then you paid for it....

If you change your mind and would like to return the unit for a full refund, please contact us.

Scott:

I'd like to suggest that you contact TabletKiosk directly, probably by phone, and work out this discrepancy. If you indeed bought it directly from TabletKiosk, then you are their list, and probably under a different name, like a company name or something.

It isn't fair to accuse a company of pulling a PR stunt without getting to the bottom of the discrepancy, and give TabletKiosk the benefit of the doubt. They are the ones issuing the recall....

I received an email from Martin and Gail regarding the shipping costs - From Martin at TabletKiosk:

We are issuing a call tag for each unit to be returned via Fed Ex – but utilizing this service Fed Ex does not offer Next Day Air service back to us – the shipping back to us can be anything from 1-3 days, based on how far away the customer may be from us. We will do our best to get these units turned in less then the 72 hours from our facility – and we will ship back overnight.

Scott: it appears to me as if TabletKiosk is covering all shipping costs.

I don't have any problem with shipping it over night to TabletKiosk to cut some time out.

Whatever. I tend to take the easier route and go buy the Sony UX without the VIA
