The HTC Shift: What Might Have Been?

- Warner Crocker

HTC ShiftTiming is everything and the HTC Shift sure seems to have suffered from bad timing. When the device was announced it caught just about everyone’s imagination. And even with confusion surrounding the specs in the early going it still had quite a few drooling over it. But then delays hit and hit again. Although no one has commented for sure, I’m reasonably convinced that this had something to do with the Qualcomm/Broadcom legal dispute.

At this year’s CES, Shifts were available to be seen and fondled and the word from this HTC rep is that they would be availble for shipping in the US by the end of the first quarter of 2008. Of course this same gentleman was also quick to point out that HTC wasn’t calling the Shift a UMPC anymore. (You can catch that in this video.)

I was actually quite surprised when I got my hands on the Shift. In many ways the size, form factor, and keyboard actually exceeded my expectations. Although a tad heavier than I expected, I really liked how the device fit in my hands. From purely a hardware factor, the Shift still has one big drawback and that is inferior battery life (reports are just over 2 hours.) But that said, the design of this mobile device looked like it could be a real competitor.

Just prior to CES a number of folks, yours truly included, pondered that the HTC Shift’s time might have come and gone with all the delays. The impending introduction of the MID’s was about to change the marketplace When the Shift finally shipped it might find a difficult road ahead in a changed landscape. I still think this is true and in many ways that is a shame really. Aside from the battery life issues, it is a very compelling ultra-mobile device.

So, here’s my question. Is the HTC Shift still on your radar or have you passed it by? Comments, please.

What's the real-world alternative? All the other UMPCs I've investigated suffer from useless keyboards.

The Shift ceased to be the device I was waiting for way back when it came out it didn't dual boot into a full Windows Mobile OS as well as Vista or XP, as was originally thought. That was the aspect that truly excited me, and might have made it suffice as my sole constant companion. So now it's the Advantage that's my constant companion, but of course I take my Tablet (Toshiba M700) along whenever I think I'll need more computing power.

I've been trying to find out from anyone who attended CES if there is a soon to be released UMPC that meets or exceeds the specs of the Shift. I need a Windows machine that enables me to quickly type e-mails and memos, search the Multiple Listing Service and send property reports to customers on the fly, jot virtual sticky notes, ink contracts without vectoring, and maintain my schedule. The UMPCs currently on the market -- including the Fujitsu Lifebook with its reportedly elfen keyboard and unstable screen (for inking) -- just won't cut it. The Shift's specs indicate it will deliver. Bottom line question, Warner, if you're convinced the shift is a has-been, what's taking its place?

As a pilot, the Shift was originally high on my list for a UMPC/ultraportable to take with me on the road when I didn't want to lug my (still fantastic, but not exactly small) Toshiba M4 with me. The two main reasons I've moved on:

1) Any device for my usage needs would need to have at least 3.5-4 hours of battery life on the standard battery (and I would be willing to carry the extra weight/bulk for an extended battery or spare standard battery for additional life)

2) Doesn't have the full Windows Mobile as originally promised

It's still on my list for a few reasons...

1. Nothing else quite compares with the size and near-touch-typeable keyboard.
2. I'm hoping that some smart person will figure a way to shoehorn a full version of Windows Mobile onto it.
3. I'm also figuring someone or another will release a bigger battery which will improve the poor battery life.

But even without those "fixes", I still think it could meet my needs pretty well.

Is HTC like MS and some of the software companies by announcing tantalising products well before they will be available (a guerilla marketing tactic?)? I spent months researching my first PPC Phone and decided on the HTC P3600 Trinity in 2006 - and waited and waited. It eventually arrived in the UK at the end of Novemerb after repeated announcements of new shipping dates and I did get one, just in time.
Yes, the Shift sounded like the device for me, for the similar reasons stated by FlyingShawn. But I gave up waiting at the same time as reports on battery life started coming out.
In November 2007 I bought a Fujitsu U810. If I hadn't, I wouldn't be waiting again for the Shift, would probably have gone for the new OQO2 or the Vye S18.
