The Mobile Bag InkShow

- Rob Bushway

I have a problem. I love bags.  I really enjoy trying out new laptop bags, sleeves, slip cases, backpacks, and seeing how they work / don’t work. I’ve collected quite a few bags over the years, as evidenced in the picture below.

Bags2 2007_04_11_16_44_42 001 4_7_2007 4_35 PM_0001My wife, Kathi, has put up with my bag fettish for quite some time and has had enough of it. I caught her trying to get rid of my bag collection, and she laid down the law – they have to go.

So before she dumped the bags, I was able to get them on video for this InkShow and show eveyone various styles of bags, including backpacks, laptop bags, a sling bag, and a sleeve case.

Giveaway time:  I was able to save a couple of the bags from the wrath of the bag lady, and will be giving away the Willow Design bag, the Waterfield sleeve case, the Microsoft branded Ogio laptop bag, and the Lenovo laptop bag. Post a comment to this article telling us about your favorite mobile bag, whether featured in this InkShow or not. We’ll pick 4 random winners. Contest ends at 9:00 pm MT, Sunday, April 15. We’ll announce the four winners on Monday, April 16. Be sure to leave your email address so we know how to contact the winners. Open to U.S. and International residents. Winners responsible for their own duties / taxes.

Enjoy the show!

My favorite mobile bag is my Bengals bookbag. Great for packing my PDA, laptop and Wii and all the accessories for each.

I really liked the Ogio Metroid Backpack. I am a sophmore in college, attending the University of Washington and normally buy low-quality backpacks due to finances. I did though, once, buy a higher-end Toshiba backpack to fit my laptop into (about $85) but that was a bad experience because it didn't last long. I like the convenience of having all my school materials and my laptop, when I needed it, in one easy to carry package. The price isn't too bad, and the aestetics make it very desireable. The fact that it is much more than a backpack is amazing--it's like there is no end to what it can do!

My favourite bag is a backpack from american tourister (a subdivision of Samsonite) I buy for 20 € (about 19$). It's very comfortable and small, it fits perfectly to my m400 and lets me packing also my mp3, two batteries, charger and some papers for my job.

I also have another bag (from a non very known company) that has a steel cover, so it's very very protective, but a lot (I mean A LOT :P) heavy. I only used it when I travel long trips by car, packing in it my tablet so it is very safe, but when i arrive to my destiny, I shufle to my backpack (hey, I love my shoulder, and that steel monster destroy it :P).

Kathy said you shot your video for "All the men all over the country". Let her know that GBM has regular viewers (male and female) all over the WORLD! :)

Cheers.

My favorite bag is the converible messenger bag from Tumi (T-Tech) line. Although rather pricey ($195) its design and craftsmanship are excellent. You can use it as messenger bag or it can convert to a backpack. It has plenty of pockets and has a sleek design. It works well with my fujitsu p1610.

I have the bag issue too. I'm constantly in search of new ones. My current bag is a kensington backpack with a tom bihn (www.tombihn.com) sleeve in it. I've had it over 2 years and I'm itching for a new one. (On a side note, I sent an email asking if I could order some replacement pulls for the zippers, I've lost a couple. They responded back immediately asking for an address, they're sending the pulls out under warranty). I do like the Tom Bihn bags (I have a smaller, non-computer one) and may have to splurg one of these days.

i have a real love of bags as well, though mostly messenger bags - so i know what you mean! as for my favorite laptop bag, though, it's a sleeve made by levenger. it holds special sentiment for me because it was a gift from a woman who now hates my guts (and i don't mind saying i hold no particularly fond feelings for her either). i'm a graduate student getting my ph.d. in history, and the sleeve was a gift from a professor for whom i was working as a research assistant at the time. when we met, we got along famously, and she was in fact rather instrumental in getting me into the program i'm currently in, and in securing a departmental fellowship for me. one year for christmas, when we were still on good terms, she gave me this laptop sleeve as a 'gift'. i was pleased, but it was clearly used/not at all brand new, yet wrapped and presented as though it were just off the shelves. i was a little peeved at this, since it was probably an attempt to clear out her own stock of bags whilst simultaneously making it look like she was thoughtful and generous, but i didn't give it much mind. the reason i love it and still use it is that, after we had our falling out, she did her very best to try and tank my career and make sure i never finished my degree - but i ended up going on and then eventually getting a grant to do research in germany and the uk, and am writing my dissertation now. so i guess using that sleeve is a symbol of my work to defeat a personal tyrant of sorts - and a symbol of generally overcoming difficult professional obstacles. it's incredibly beat up and ragged at this point, but i love it anyway, and use it daily!!! Rob:

Our wives should get together and forma support group! I suffer from the same affliction - UBCS - Uncontrollable Bag Collector Syndrome. ;^)

My current favorite is the Oakley Vertical Laptop Bag. It has a very slim profile yet an astonishing capacity to hold much stuff, seriously heavy-duty hardware, and great padding for the Lenovo X60t or MacBook which are my current primary machines.

AMD used this bag for their recent Acer Ferrari promotion.

I've combined an REI Grand Teton book bag with an inexpensive sleeve I found on eBags to create a small, light, minimalist laptop backpack for less than $30, which is about all my college (UMBC) budget would allow. This is my favorite bag because A) I'm not a big guy, and this bag isn't so large that it sits too low on my back; B) its just big enough for my Lenovo X60, one textbook, my sunglasses, and a water bottle; and C) it was very inexpensive so I don't have to worry about replacement cost if it gets messed up. Unfortunately, the bag is very thin and leaves something to be desired in build quality. I would have bought something from SFBags, but I just couldn't afford it at the time. So far I've been nice to my tablet, but I'll be working full time in downtown Baltimore this summer and I need something a little more serious in terms of durability and professional appearance.

I'm a big fan of the OGIO line. They have the best combination of compartments, padding and durability of any bag I've ever used. The style is often a little too urban chic, but their functionality is too much to let that get in the way. Their new '07 Sling is a perfect UMPC bag.

By the way, a sling should be worn strap across the chest, so that the pack lies flat against the back, as opposed to the way Rob demonstrated in the video, i's just a lot more comfortable that way!

I just got a TC4400 so of course I had to get a new bag. So I got the Tom Bihn Buzz Sling bag. It's discontinued but you can still get it at a discount cause they're making it bigger, which I think is a mistake. It is a perfect fit for a 12" tablet with enough padding to protect but without the bulk. Perfect for city living and working. A nice plus is it comes in cool colors. I've got many gear bags in every shade of black :) so this is a nice change. I can pack my pds, tablet, power cord, etc and it rides close to my back a plus when navigating crowded sidewalks and buses.

Far and away, my favorite bags are all Timbuk2 bags, especially their laptop messenger bag--looks just like their regular messenger bag, so it's not obvious that it's a computer bag, but it provides a padded pocket for a laptop.

My favorite bag is the Gigabyte backpack available at Mountain Equipment Coop, www.mec.ca . First of all, its built to last. Second, it has a little pocket for your notebook that stops a few inches from the bottom of the bag. This protects it from getting dinged when I put my bag on the ground. The bag also features A TON of different pockets, mesh compartments and various storage areas. I can keep pretty much all of my gear with me as well as some other school essentials like pens and a clipboard. Plus it looks great.

My favorite from the list would be the Victorinox Architecture Collection Eiffel Slim-Line Vertical Brief.

Off the list, I'm partial to the PIEL leather brand of envelope/messenger bags.

My absolute favorite is the Piel - Entrepeneur Envelope Portfolio, http://www.luggage.com/Piel-Leather-2363-VW1054.html, with three interior pockets for my TC1100, a book or two and important files and papers (still have papers in todays day and age *sigh*), plenty of pockets, nooks and crannies to get things lost in.

Another favorite is the Piel - Zip Around Envelope, http://www.luggage.com/Piel-Leather-2567-VW1157.html, though doesn't offer as much protection. It still gives the basic idea, a protective cover from the elements, space for the tablet pc, pens, a file or two.

Found this David King - Vertical Laptop Messenger Bag, and it is kind of a good one, too (http://www.luggage.com/David-King-187X-XB1017.html). Space for all the above, and has a shoulder strap to boot.

WaterField Designs (SFBags.com) are the best of the best, I've had my Cargo for over two years and it still looks new and gets compliments regularly. It is rugged, functional (great pockets - well thought out) and very cool looking. I have bought a bunch of gear from these guys over the years, because it's such great quality and the people there are good people (made in the U.S.!). I highly recommend them.

Here's what I have:
Cargo: http://www.sfbags.com/products/cargo/cargo.htm
Sleevease: http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases.htm
Cableguy: http://www.sfbags.com/products/cableguy/cableguy.htm
Camera case: http://www.sfbags.com/products/cameracase/cameracase.htm

Just got an email from them that they came out with a new bag too: http://www.sfbags.com/products/slingbag/sling.htm

My favorite bag to date is a Kenneth Cole Reaction rolling bag, which I use for my all to frequently trips flying on planes with smaller above-seat storage.

I must admit, though, that the manufacturing quality is a bit flimsy -- not like a brief case I have from the same manufacturer -- and I'm looking for an improved version.

My favorite bag at the moment has to be my backpack. Being a college student, I rely heavily on this bag. It's a forest green Targus bag with room to carry everything I need, including my tablet, iPod, books, and accessories. It even has a insulated compartment to keep things cold, such as lunch and drinks. Very convenient.

I am very happy with my backpack from booq bag that I got about a year ago, I combine it with a sleeve from sfbags (got it for my x60), so my x60t is quite comfy.

Rob - this shows you are doing something wrong. My wife insisted that I get more gadget carriers. The difference has nothing to do with you, me, or our wives.

The difference is that I typically carry my Motion LS800 in a special large pocket on my sport jacket (see http://www.segal.org/tablet/photo/). My wife complained when I started wearing that sport jacket all the time and insisted that I get three more sport jackets with the large pockets.

So it all depends on the type of gadget carrier.

(I do have a CD-player case for my LS800 for those times when wearing a sport jacket doesn't work, so if my name comes up randomly pass the gadget bag on to someone else.)

My favorite bag for my Thinkpad X60 Tablet is my olive drab army map bag, which you can buy at any army/navy surplus store for about $20 (it also comes in black, tan, or camo). It's probably not the safest bag for a laptop as there's no cushion (maybe I'll buy a sleeve for it someday), and you need the 4-cell for it to fit (it measures 9x12x4"), but it does the job. I just love the idea of using the old with the new (after about a year of use, the bag gets kind of ragged and loses its green color - I've owned at least three since the 90s). I also love that it's cheap, and that it's commonplace enough (and fairly standardized) that I can find one most anywhere.

I'm a sleeve guy. I looked at the SF but to get it to Australia was going to cost a packet. Instead I found what could only be described as a wetsuit from my X60T. At 20 bucks including delivery it was well worth it. The only thing it misses is a place for business cards.

I have to say that I also really love my WaterField sleeve, it fits great, and seems to protect my X60t well; it has saved me from more than a couple of drops that would have otherwise been very nasty.

While I have affectionately called my wife the bag lady for years, for her collection of handbags, I have unknowingly amassed my own collection computer bags. I started buying leather "traditional" bags with many pockets for files and stuff. Trying new styles every now and then, however, staying with the same basic layout. I even experimented with a "binder" style case with a handle. Held the computer, but no accessories. Power cord had to stay home. I have settled on a free backpack case I got a a conference that had a sleeve for a notebook computer. Has enough pockets for all the peripherals, plus 2 bottles of water, soda, or any other drink. Stuck with that for 2 years now. It is getting so much use that it is starting to tear at a couple seams. Guess I need to be looking for a new one soon...

I too have a really bad bag fetish. It drives my wife mad in a similar way as it does your wife - she does does not understand why I have to look at every laptop / gadget bag in every shop I see!

I like small, lightweight bags for use with my P1610. The sort you can just pick up with and just go, knowing that you have everything in hand for the task in question. At the moment I use a CaseLogic bag designed for 10" laptops - it has enough room for my P1610, BatteryGeek Power Bank, iPod, headphones and Stowaway mouse.

However I am always looking for better and alternative bags. It is a true problem... just like my gadget addiction!

I got a messenger bag from being a Windows Live Messenger beta tester, and it fits my Toshiba R15 (14.1") perfectly. There isn't room for any textbooks, but I have little reason to take more than a couple of folders and a calculator to class with me so it works pretty well.

I can not be true...someone that is as bad or worse than I am in the quest to find the perfect bag/carry solution! Rob, you are a man after my own heart and if my wife read your post she would be on the phone with your wife comparing notes.

I too love trying to find just the right bag as I am convinced that the right bag is as important as the tablet. Currently I am using a slip case by Waterfield but would love to be considered to try out on of your excess bags. Funny how women have tons of shoes but as soon as husbands start accumulating something we have to get rid of the excess!!

I'm quite satisfied with the CaseLogic bag that Motion Computing has for their LE1600, but I wonder if a bag like the Lapdog http://www.sjdesign.com/lapdog.html (or) http://www.computerbags.com/lapdog.html wouldn't be nice to use - fold out, take out laptop. Put laptop back in, fold up. Easy.
