The NY Times Wonders if Windows Is Nearing The End

- Warner Crocker

Interesting read in The New York Times interviewing Steve Ballmer. The premise is that Windows might be nearing the end of its dominance given the influences of Google, Web 2.0, and regulation issues, as well as the normal Microsoft bashing that is ever present, and Bill Gates’ move towards his philanthropic efforts.

For what is worth, I have stated and still believe that things are moving so fast on so many technology fronts (and so slow on others)  that Microsoft, or any large company for that matter, will always be playing catch up in the race to conquer the world.

This past week, I've noticed Windows running on several systems that simply should not have been running Windows. One was a supermarket self-check system. The other is the public library lookup system. These are dedicated networked systems with specific software needs. You don't need a flexible OS to run only one app. They could easily and more reliably run on a streamlined, custom flavor of Linux that would have cost a lot less, but that Windows stranglehold is just too strong. Hard for me to see how Windows is nearing its end when I see it in places it doesn't need to be.
