The Tablet PC at home

- Rob Bushway

I’ve inquired in the past about how our readers are using their tablet pcs in the day to day of work -moving from client to client, inking in meetings, being deskbound, etc.

Since we are at the weekend when most of us are not working, I’m curious as to how you use the tablet when away from work. Give me some examples of what you are doing this weekend and how the tablet pc does play / does not play a part.

Me?

  • I’m spending all day Saturday helping a friend build a swing. I’ll take my LS800 with me. It’ll primarily stay in hibernate mode. I’m bringing it “just in case” . I won’t have a real need to use it with a drill in my hand.
  • I’ll do some work on and off this weekend, pimarily working on some writing assignments for a writing class I’m taking. I tend to map it out using MindManager first, then get Word out and stop typing.
  • We attend church on Sunday. I usually try to take my tablet pc with me to take notes with. Carrying a 12” convertible tablet makes that less desirabl, though, so I have not been taking much lately. However, the LS800 is the same size as my bible, so it blends right in and is less distracting and easier to use than a Pocket PC based Bible and note-taking tool.
  • Since I’m self-employed, I still end up using the weekend to work some. Most of that work is done with a keyboard, either at a recliner or in bed.
  • While the kids are watching Saturday morning cartoons, I’m in the recliner browsing the news.

I world like to take my tablet to Church too but my wife won't sit with me! Thanks for all the help your site has given me. Hope you hare a great weekend!

Excuse me, but are you implying that there are people who don't reach for their TabletPCs the minute they wake up and who don't tuck them in shortly before hitting the sack?

When I'm at home, I'm:
-reading and posting to the Buzz, tech blogs and Microsoft newsgroups
-doing a little bit of blogging of my own
-banking
-reading and sending email to friends and relatives
-harassing MVPs
-buying stuff (mostly tech)
-I may take time out to prepare the forms in my GoBinder work DB for a second attempt at moving to 2006

It is all about the tablet during my time. Not the XBox, not the desktops, not the tv, not so much the paperbacks. The tablet.

There are a few exceptions. I still have to sleep :(. My sedentary lifestyle was causing me to become more of a MaxiMage than a MiniMage, so I started up Tae Kwon Do again. We go play computer games with our friends once a week, and Age of Empires III runs awfully in my TPC, so I use a desktop for that. Next year, I expect to be able to buy a tablet that will do better; I'll be miffed, if I can't.

Wag more than you wanted to know, huh?

Hey Rob,
I work on my Motion LE-1600 all day doing property inspections. At night and on the weekends, I dock it and use in conjunction with my desk top as a second system. I'm an online gamer among other things and use it to run TeamSpeak for voice chat in the game without having to window out of the game to see who logged on to my TS server. I also run several support sites for the game I'm playing. (World of Warcraft)
About two weeks ago, I did something that trashed my internet connection. Was fooling with the wireless access point trying to set up MAC address filtering. Took everything down for about a day and a half.
I just popped in the Sprint Ev-DO and never missed a beat while I sorted out the problem. Sure nice to have a totally separate system to still get on line in a case like this.

I run my business off my Tablet :-) It's my desktop replacement in the office, my PCD offsite and my connection to the office at home!

My daughter loves painting on it, and now that I have VISTA installed (dual boot), there are a few more games for her to play. (Can't say too much about that).

I would LOVE to bring this to church with me. I would be able to record the sermons and take notes as I go, plus reference my Bible software and cut and paste! But my wife get's mad if I even take notes on my Pocket PC in church. She thinks i'm distracting people.

One day I'll get me way though! I'll bring in STONE TABLETS instead, and when she gets mad I'll tell her "Hey - MOSES did it! why cant I???"

God bless all!

Rob & Crew,

I've really enjoyed the site. Keep the great content coming.

I have an HP TC1100, and can't figure out which Tablet to replace it with once I get a new one. That's another post, though.

Anyway, here are a few ways I use my TC1100:

1. It's my main computer, at home and work. I do not have another machine at all.

2. At work & home, I have an external monitor and I use an over/under dual screen configuration.

3. Lately, I've been using OneNote A LOT. At home, I created an Excel sheet for my workout routine (Body-For-Life), and created a background image in OneNote. Instead of using a paper notebook, like I use to, I use OneNote to keep track of my weight training (the weight and exercises I use, etc.)

4. I also take my Table to church each week. I've created a 'sermon template' in OneNote to include the main verses used, how the sermon applies to me, what I will do with the information, and a Notes section.

5. This past weekend while visiting family in Dallas, I used my Tablet and Treo 650 to surf the Internet while riding down the Interstate (I wasn't driving, of course). I also used this configuration at my brother's house who doesn't have Internet access. Arrghh!

6. From time to time, I use my Tablet and MindManager to brainstorm home projects, such as honey-do lists, and the like.

Overall, I love my Tablet and use it quite a lot at home and work, for personal and professional stuff. I look forward to reading all of the comments to this post.

I use my Tablet PC for- EVERYTHING. At home I surf the web, capture items for blogging, and read ebooks with eReader Pro. I find the slate is the perfect medium for reading books and it provides me a complete book experience with additional benefits like always starting right where I left off. Letting me look up words I don't know on the fly. This is a niche that Origamis will excel, as ebook readers.

I’ve been using a Motion M1300 for the past couple of months and really love it. Last weekend, I decided to really push the envelope and try something unusual...

Auto GPS Nav a la Tablet PC!

My wife & I were headed to a large metropolitan area and were apprehensive about being able to find our way around. So I loaded my copy of MS Streets & Trips 2006 with the GPS hardware onto the tablet and used it as our on-board car navigation system. And it worked great! I’ve tried this before with my older Sony notebook and, while it worked well enough, the tablet was far better due to its size and much easier to read in the car than a notebook screen – possibly something about the anti-glare coating or such? The pen-interface worked quite well with S&T and since S&T ’06 features vocal driving directions, I routed those thru the car’s stereo via XM radio cassette adapter.
