The Asus R2H with Vista Now Complete

- Warner Crocker

Asusr2h1Well, whadda ya know. I’ve now got complete Asus R2H functionality with Vista. The last piece of kit that wasn’t working is the webcam and now, that is indeed working. I followed the instructions in this post on the Asus forums from Jay. That said, it is not the most intuitive install of a utility or driver I’ve ever seen. Far from it.

Here’s he quick wrapup. First I installed the driver at this link (the one dated 6.32.0.2) and guess what it has an install file. That’s a good first step. But then the fun starts. In the original Vista driver package I downloaded from the very flaky Asus site there is a registry tweak included. You have to install this registry tweak in order to get the camera working. (A click on the file does this, but make sure you back up your registry first.) After a reboot, the camera works as advertised, as does the included really poor camera application, LifeFrame. Again, I’m not a fan of the camera Asus has included and think it is a weak addition the way it performs, but I’ve been hammering away at getting it working for the principal of the thing. Heck, the LifeFrame utility doesn’t even scale appropriately to the native 800x480 resolution of the device. What a hideous piece of software that is. I hope no one purchases the R2H because of the camera. It isn’t worth it for that.

So, there you have it. The R2H with complete functionality under Vista. Easy? No way. You have to jump through too many hoops to make this happen, and I can only hope that when Asus finally begins shipping disks with Vista on it to those who took advantage of the upgrade offer, things will go much more smoothly. Asus also really needs to address their support site issues. The fact that the drivers appear and disappear from log in to log in is just not acceptable. Talk about random.

As I said in this post, for one of my principal uses for this device (note taking) it was a delight to be able to use this device again. It was nothing close to a delight to get the device to that point. In fact, if it weren’t for my stubborn streak and personal curiosity in trying to help others solve this puzzle, I would have long ago just gone back to XP and called it a day.

One other point that bears mentioning. I have not installed the Power4Gear application which is the Asus software that allows you to set up different battery profiles. In my opinion it isn’t needed for the overhead it places on system resources. As I mentioned yesterday, I got great battery life using the 4 cell battery, and I’m able to set up what I need to do for various situations with Vista’s power managment features. Those who have an Asus know that it is loaded with CRAPWARE and some useful apps when you first boot it up. My personal recommendation is that you don’t need this application and can save yourself some overhead by not installing it given the options already included with Vista.

Warner,

Talking about a dog, searching for the last bone on earth....
I just ordered the unit and planned to buy Vista as well but since I saw your stories I will keep it as it comes and will just trow it in the garbagecan when it doesn't do the job.

I hope to run office on it and do not even know if that is included or not yet.

In reality gadgets as these are sold and bought just because... and not because they are so much improving the quality of life.

I am sure that you also do have a book shelf full of things you do not even tough anymore.

And as long as people like us are there, people like Asus will produce things to keep us happy.

And the Warner Crockers busy and from the street.

Thanks for yr investigations Warner

To my knowledge Asus isn't offering a package with Office pre-installed. That said Office 2007 worked well on XP and is doing well on Vista, although I don't use it that much on this device. I do use OneNote 2007 quite a bit though and that works well on both OS's.

I'm going back out into the street now. ;)

In my own experiences the WiFi is much better with the new drivers. I haven't seen the drop outs, and the signal is stronger, and as I said in one of these posts it feels snappier.

The power4gera Ultimate provide by Asus is integrated into the windows Vista power management appletts and thus I dont think it takes up as many resources like it may have donw with XP. I find it easier to use power4gear to select power profiles via the setting page, and the power profiles cna be configured the same as the vista ones

Good to know David. Even with reduced overhead, for my usage, I can handle the power management with what Vista offers.

Hi all, been following this like a hawk after a mouse! I just received my asus express upgrade package from microsoft. It contains what is seemingly a normal OEM vista CD AND here is the interesting part, a new Asus r2h drivers and apps cd! I havent had time to get it cracking yet but I plan to have a crack in two ways. Firstly ill just do an "express upgrade" using the supplied manual and cds, then i'll do a fresh install on a cleanly formated drive and compare the difference in performance and all the asus functionality.

Be in touch very soon

p.s. i just started the clean install of vista now and im installing the asus cd apps and drivers now to see the performance.

alright, status update, you can forget just whacking the asus apps +driver cd in and pressing install, everything installs but the hot keys don't work - as we have all figured out the order does matter in which you install drivers and utilities. and don't bother with an express upgrade - in my case it just wouldn't boot and when it did it took forever!

I have one bulletproof solution.

1. Format
2. Install clean vista no drivers NO windows updates
3. with the asus vista drivers cd, select "advanced" then choose ONLY the drivers, NO apps or utilities
4. reboot
5. you install ONLY asus utilities for OSD, hotkeys, settings center, etc
6. reboot

at this stage you will ahve a fully functioning system without the "crapware"
I chose to install the power4 gear and it seems to integrate with the asus settings and in screen display quite nicely and also seems to give me better battery life.

if any one would like more info about my install process please give me a yell on the email (microq@msn.com.au)

thanks
and enjoy vista on ur r2h

Hi all again, I have been running around the outback (countryside) in australia in the bush with my UMPC so I havent been able to get on the web to post my findings with the Asus official Vista upgrade pack. I will be posting an exhaustive update when i get home from work tonight. In the mean time, just follow what I did above in that order.

Thanks for waiting all - stay tuned!

well well well...ive been slack as! well not really, I have had countless problems with finding time to write anything far short of an email lately - but thats another story.

I have come to one conclusion. Vista is the best OS for use on a tablet enabled PC (including obviously our R2H).
As recently noted on GBM there has been ANOTHER BIOS update to 207 - this does as it says fix a problem with the LAN sleep mode. I have just started encountering that annoying blue screen and crash after coming out of of sleep again! When I first installed Vista according to my earlier post everything was fine. No crashing or blue screen. I have since installed Office 2007 and all the windows updates that come down the pipeline. I am not sure exactly where the problems has risen from. This has to be the single most frustrating issue at the moment as it means that I am almost unable to use vista as my primary OS simply becuase I have to boot it up from scratch every time!

I do have to add that the quality of the Asus software in Vista, in particular the on screen display for power and connection choice (wifi, bluetooth, etc) is much much better than in XP. I am sure that it is a Vista problem with USB rather than an asus specific drive.

If anyone has any comments regarding this bluescreen USB issue - please feel free to contact me no matter how technical you think it may be.

Till next time

Dave
