Toshiba announces 3G HSDPA options for the M400 Tablet PC

- Rob Bushway

If you think EV-DO is a hot thing, look forward to HSDPA - broadband speeds of 1.8 mbps download and 400 kbps upload.

Along with offering integrated Verizon WWAN on their current M400 Tablet PC, Toshiba just announced at GITEX 2006 HSDPA support in their M400 for the Middle East only at this point. I suspect it won't be long before the M400 HSDPA options come to the U.S., and with Cingular working on HSDPA, we will soon be surfing at absolutely wonderful speeds. Anything is better than Cingular's EDGE network!

This is great news for us Cingular folk... hope it gets here soon!

I had a business representative give me a demonstration of their HSDPA offering about a month ago. I was pretty impressed and I'm a Verizon fan myself. Their speeds were very good here in NYC, approximately 1.1 Mbps while my Verizon EvDO card gets about 700 kbps. Now realistically, this is on a service that has considerably less than full coverage within NYC and has much less utilization (read: customers) than the equivalent Verizon service. That being said, it is a VERY impressive offering. The simultaneous data and voice functionality of HSDPA is great and Cingular's building out plan, at least in NYC, is also impressive. They are still behind Verizon, but hey, I really like the competition. It keeps things moving. Long live competition! :-)

I have had my card for over a month now and I have never seen speeds below 1.2 Mbps. It's good stuff - but like you said, coverage is not like Verizon, but it is getting better.
