Update on Dell Latitude XT Gridding Issue

- Rob Bushway

I've been working with Dell some more on this gridding issue from last week. Dell feels that there is something physically wrong with my screen. I should not be seeing as much of the underlying grid as I am. In fact, as I'm typing this post up there is a window to my back with the sun shining in - the grid is very visible.

So, Dell is sending out a replacement screen which should be here tomorrow or Thursday. As is standard practice, a service tech will come by to install it. So, I should know pretty quickly if my old screen was out of whack.

I've also been posting other items that have reared up over in the Dell forum. Most of the problems look like driver issues. For example, if I reboot my tablet while docked and have an external monitor set as my primary monitor, an N-Trig error dialog box will display upon start up. This does not happen on normal boot. Another issue is some weird pen behavior that shows up intermittently.

InkShow production is in progress. Stay tuned. I hope to have my first one posted sometime tomorrow. It'll be a focus on the pen, ink, and touch.

Do you think Dell is being extra nice to you in regards to your grid issue because they know you are blogging about it. Did you purchase an extra special warranty?

Thanks and keep up the good reporting on the mobile world.

Everything they've done so far is within the service warranty that I purchased, normal customer service. They know I'm blogging about and are good about reminding me that this is not out of the norm for what they do for other customers with similar issues.

I recently went through a similar situation with another customer on a Dell XPS workstation. They replaced 3 - 4 different items before finally deciding to give them a brand new system. Each time, they sent out a tech to do the work at no charge.

Keep us posted on the screen exchange, I don't have a Dell, but this would be good to hear what the out come will be. I currently own the Q1P, and use the U810, along with my Macbook Pro for the heavy duty computing. Rob if the gridding Issue is the same as now when they replace the screen; would you more likely get the one with out the N-Trig? I saw the pictures you posted, which show the gridding and is very visable. Well good luck and the Dell Tablet seems to be a solid machine over all, so I will await your inkShow on it.

Hooray for "Gold Tech Support"! :)

We use that on all our systems here at work, and it is very nice to have the tech come for the more complicated hardware swaps. Even though I am very capable of doing it myself, I like having them do those replacements on my behalf.

Anyway, good luck with the replacement.

Your obsession with the grid issue is as worse as my issue with heat emitted from tablet PC. This kind of obsession is like a scar and probably never gets away. Perhaps return the XT tablet and buy another new brand for another review for your loyal viewers? : )
