Vista SP1 Showing 4gig of Memory Now?

- Matt Faulkner

4gig After a failed attempt at SP1, I thought there MIGHT be a reason to try again so quickly after getting recovered from the crash...  Maybe Vista would really see all 4 gig of my memory that I have in the Lenovo x61...  Forum member zegrafilm is reporting that his/her machine is now reporting all 4 gig of space - even with a screen shot.  But, after reading some more, and seeing K0LO's comment in the same thread, I think it's just a show, not useable...  dang!!

Part of the change log (as commented by K0LO in this same thread) states:

With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4BG in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.

Maybe I should try and put the 64bit OS on my x61, 64bit would actually see and use all 4gig of memory...  That would make for a fun weekend project!

I've just ordered 4Gb for my M400. Running 64 bit Vista on my desktop (4Gb Quad Core) and it runs really well. I may do a disk image of my Portege and then have a go at 64 bit on it. Better block out the whole weekend for that one!

Please be aware of the issues with "send to Onenote" for 64bit Vista before you switch.
It kept me from changing....

Dang, and here I thought Vista SP1 had defied the laws of binary mathematics! :)

Go to 64 bit. To be clear, it is the *print* to OneNote feature that is not suppored in x64. Send to OneNote from IE and Outlook still works. It runs very well for me on my core 2 quad with 3GB of RAM. But just remember, the more RAM you have, the more RAM applications and Windows will use. It's a good thing though. Showing 2GB of RAM free is about as useful as an OS that ignores 2GB of RAM.

I'm running 64 bit on my X61T and I am very happy with it. The only current problem I have is I cannot login to Windows with the fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader works once I am logged in though.

Initially, I had problems with the video drivers, but I was able to fix that by manually installing the drivers directly from Intel's site.
