Vista Successor Slated for 2009?

- Warner Crocker

Ok, there’s certainly nothing certain about this, but the wires are buzzing, (or is that the Intertubes are tubing?) with word that the next version of Windows operating system, Windows 7 is being targeted for a late 2009 release. The usual “several industry sources” are doing the talking, which means have your grain of salt shaker handy.

Maybe it's just me, but that seems a little quick...

Steve: If Vista had been on time, it wouldn't seem so quick and of course there's the very slim possibility Windows 7 will be delayed.

:D Good one Sumocat. MS will hopefully have Vista working at a tolerable level by the time they spring another one on us.

If they don't revise the file system, like they promised to do with Vista, then it's a waste of time. Aww, heck, even IF they revise the file system, it will be a waste of time. MS can't shake its addictions to code bloat, multiple "editions" of releases, aversion to standards and horrific overpricing.

While I don't have too much of a problem with different versions of something, I'll agree that without a handydandy college arrangement, Windows is rather expensive to buy, retail or upgrade. I'll also agree that MS needs to buckle down and say "Hey. We have 64 bit, let's make it standard." Hopefully Win7 can accomplish that.

For the past year, Vista currently holds 11% of the market share in all Windows opertating systems. At an 11% a year O/S switchover, in two years time, I hope Windows 7 isn't introduced when vista accounts for only 30%-40% of all Windows's O/Ss'.
