Amazon Mobile App Now Features Bar Code Scanning. Will Probably Lead to More Action from Store Owners

Published

We’ve already seen a number of bar code scanning Apps on the iOS and Android platforms. Essentially these Apps scan a bar code and return results so that you can compare prices at other locations and retail outlets. Power to the consumer, right?

Well, we’ve also heard reports about stores, being upset about this, banning this kind of comparison shopping when they see it occurring.

Now Amazon has updated its iPhone App to allow this kind of bar code scanning, and I’m guessing that might only accelerate the store owners’ attempts to stop shoppers from this kind of comparing prices, simply because it is from Amazon.

How many GBM Readers use these kind of Apps for price comparisons? And if you do, have you ever been asked not to do so by a store’s management?

No business should be allowed to ban someone comprising shopping. The more information that the consumer has the better off the consumer is and it will force companies to be better. One of the main precepts of Neo-Classical economics is Perfect Information meaning for an economy to work effectively people need all the relevant information toward their economic decision making and this is just one more form of information needed to help the economy be more effective.

The stores’ actions are nothing new. I’ve been asked to leave stores for writing down sale prices in a notepad–the old-fashioned kind, spiral-bound with a pencil!

My reaction? “If you want me to leave, I will. Just don’t expect me ever to come back!”
