Amazon Offers Students Kindle Fire HD 8.9 For $250

For the month of January Amazon will offer the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to students for $50 off the $300 asking price.

For the next month Amazon Student members can buy the largest version of the Kindle Fire HD starting at $249 for the 16GB model. The discount applies to all models of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, including the 32GB model and the 4G LTE model of the tablet. The 32GB model costs $319 with the discount and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE starts at $449 with the discount.

To apply for the discount students have to first sign up for Amazon Student, if they aren’t already a member. To sign up for Amazon Student users need an email address from a .edu domain. Amazon Student offers discounts on textbooks as well as a discount on Amazon Prime. After joining Amazon Student users only have to add the Kindle Fire 8.9 of their choice into their cart and add the coupon code KNDL4STU at checkout.

At $249 the 16GB Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is the same price as the 32GB model of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. The larger version of the tablet as a higher resolution display and a faster processor than the Kindle Fire HD. The two tablets have identical feature sets, however, despite the difference in size and processor speed.

Both versions of the Kindle Fire HD have easy access to Amazon services and can run any app in the Amazon Appstore. Both tablets also include Dolby audio with two speakers for better sound and dual-band wireless for faster download speeds.

For $249 the 16GB Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is also the same price as the 32GB Nexus 7 with Wi-Fi. The Nexus tablet doesn’t have the same access to Amazon’s video library as the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, but it does have a wider selection of Android apps and an arguably better UI.
