Amazon Releases Kindle Reader for PCs

Published

on

Amazon has pulled the covers off its Kindle Reader for PCs. It is now available for download here. In very early testing, it works completely as advertised and on a touch screen device it is a real pleasure to use.  The UI is completely unassuming and takes you from book selection to text and that’s about it, but if you want to use your netbook, notebook, umpc, or other device as a reader now you can. A Mac version is still in development.

If you have a Kindle (or for that matter the Kindle Reader on the iPhone) your contact syncs and you’re ready to go once you enter your account information. Of course if you’ve never gone down the Kindle router, here’s a chance for you to give it a go.

Will the book illustrations show in colour on your monitor,
or is the ePub format black and white only?

Kindle doesn’t use ePub, ePub isn’t black and white, and not sure on book illustrations as the sample I tried didn’t have any pictures.

That being said, it’s a pretty horrible app right now. I know it’s still an early version, but you can’t search, make (text) annotations or highlight, etc.

@Joe … that’s kinda disappointing to hear. Really sounds like they rushed it just to keep up with all the competition.
