Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update: 5 New Details

Published

on

Google’s Android 4.4.3 KitKat and Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates continue to emerge at a furious pace. With details swirling, we want to take an updated look at the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update release situation and provide five of the latest, and most important, Android 4.4.4 KitKat update details for top Android devices.

In June, Google pushed out a trio of Android updates including two new Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades and the new Android L update. Android L, the successor to Android 4.4 KitKat, is currently in beta form and will be out sometime this year. So for now, Android 4.4.3 KitKat and Android 4.4.4 KitKat reign as Google’s current updates.

Google’s Android 4.4.3 KitKat was the first of the two new Android 4.4 KitKat updates and it arrived in early June with a laundry list of bug fixes on board. It also introduced cosmetic changes to the People application and the look of the dialer. Android 4.4.3 KitKat may not be a big update but it’s an important update nonetheless.

In late June, Google pushed out Android 4.4.4 KitKat, a smaller update that contains just one fix: A security patch for OpenSSL vulnerabilities. And while companies like HTC opted to forge ahead with Android 4.4.3 KitKat updates with the Android 4.4.4 KitKat security fix on board, other companies have chosen to roll out Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates with Android 4.4.3 KitKat bug fixes on board.

Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat is a little bit confusing that’s why we want to help simplify things for device owners. Here, we want to take a look at five new key details regarding the Android 4.4.4 KitKat release. These new details will help paint a clear picture of where the roll out is currently at and provide some clarity about where the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is heading next.

Motorola Android 4.4.4 KitKat Release Continues

The Motorola Android 4.4.4 KitKat update release is cruising along in the United States as the AT&T Moto X recently got its upgrade to Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The update is a massive upgrade for AT&T users and includes changes to the dialer, improvements to the camera, and “accuracy improvements to the power profile, several stability, framework and security fixes including update to OpenSSL.”

AT&T and Motorola pushed the update live to all Moto X users last week so those that are still sitting on an earlier version of Android 4.4 KitKat will want to think about upgrading to the latest version given all of the enhancements and fixes that it has on board.

We’re also expecting the Sprint Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to arrive in the imminent future after testing behind the scenes. The testing started five days ago and soak tests typically take about a week or so to complete before Motorola feels comfortable rolling software out to the public. Look for the Sprint Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to arrive this week or next.

U.S. Cellular’s Moto X Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is still without a release date but the company maintains that it will be rolling out to users in the not-so-distant future.

Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update Delays

Not everything is going to according to plan. Australian carrier Telstra recently issued an updated look at its upcoming Android updates and the news isn’t good for owners of its Sony Xperia devices.

The carrier says that it has encountered delays for its Xperia Z Android 4.4.4 KitKat update (two week delay into September), Xperia Z1 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update and Xperia Z1 Compact Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. The last two do not have an ETA. The carrier will likely issue an updated look at its schedule in the coming weeks which hopefully will outline when it plans to push these updates out.

Android 4.4.4 KitKat Problems Mount

Android 4.4.4 KitKat problems are well documented but we can add some more issues to the growing list. It appears that the OnePlus One’s latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat upgrade, the XNPH30O OTA update, has delivered serious battery life problems to owners of the elusive smartphone.

Fortunately, those behind the OnePlus One claim that an upcoming OTA will alleviate those issues and bring battery life back to where it was before the device was upgraded with Android 4.4.4 KitKat and an assortment of bug fixes.

Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.3 KitKat Update

In September, Samsung will release its new Galaxy Alpha, a mid-range device that comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat. However, it looks like at least one of its older devices will get Android 4.4.3 KitKat.

Last week, Vodafone Australia released a brand new schedule that lists its upcoming Android update plans. There, on the schedule, is a lone Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for the Galaxy S5. The carrier says that the update is in testing but it does not provide any other details like its release date or the features that will be on board.

When an update enters the testing process, it’s usually a few weeks before it rolls out to users. This means that we could potentially see this lone Android 4.4.3 KitKat upgrade roll out in August or September ahead of the Android L release.

So, in other words, we could see some Galaxy devices get Android 4.4.3 KitKat instead of Android 4.4.4 KitKat. It’s possible that they could receive both but given what other companies have done, that seems unlikely. Should this information be accurate, Galaxy S5 owners can expect their Android 4.4.3 KitKat update to come with tons of bug fixes and enhancements.

Galaxy Note 4 Software

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha may not be the only Samsung device with Android 4.4.4 KitKat on board.

Galaxy Note 4 S Pen

A recent Samsung Galaxy Note 4 benchmark suggests that Samsung’s Next Big Thing could come with Android 4.4.4 KitKat on board and not Android 4.4.3. Of course, benchmarks aren’t confirmations so it’s possible that we could see Android 4.4.3 KitKat or even Android 4.4.2 KitKat emerge on the Galaxy Note 4 but the appearance certainly leaves the door open. Not just for the Galaxy Note 4 but for all of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones.

We saw earlier benchmarks and a spec leak hint at Android 4.4.3 KitKat for the Galaxy Note 4 but at this point, Android 4.4.4 KitKat looks like a better bet given its presence on the Galaxy Alpha.

What are the five new details? All these articles contain so much rehashing of old details it’s hard to figure out what’s new. Put, at the very least, a hint of the new stuff in the first few paragraphs, please.
