Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Update Breakdown

Published

on

At the end of the last year, Google released an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to Nexus 7 2012 users. That update delivers some crucial fixes though the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update situation is still extremely murky. Here, we breakdown what we know about the situation and take a look at what Nexus users in general need to know about the most current version of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

At the tail end of last year, Google finally pushed out its brand new Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system for the first time. The update landed for most Nexus users including owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi, Nexus 2012 Wi-Fi, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10. The update brought new features and changes to Nexus users but it also delivered new Android problems.

Nexus users have been complaining about Android 5.0 Lollipop problems for a number of weeks now. Android 5.0 problems range from random crashes to battery life struggles to Wi-Fi problems. Google’s been working to deliver fixes for those problems and the company’s official fixes have arrived in the form of two new Android 5.0 Lollipop updates.

First, the company pushed out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, a widespread bug fix update available to owners of the Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 9, Nexus 10, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, and Nexus 6. The update did not land for the Nexus 7 2012 or the cellular versions of the Nexus 7. Google did not leave owners of the Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi hanging though.

Google’s recently released an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for the Wi-Fi version of the Nexus 7 2012. The update, like Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, is a small bug fix update aimed at toning down the problems on board the new operating system. As we push away from the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop release date, the situation is still extremely confusing for owners of Google’s Nexus 7 2012 and other Nexus devices. With the new year underway, here’s what we know right now about Google’s Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update and its roll out. This breakdown is not Nexus 7 2012 specific.

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OTA

Google remains silent about Android 5.0.2, something that’s left Nexus 7 users and other Nexus users with a lot of questions about Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Unsurprisingly, it’s left us with a ton of questions about the update as well. More than usual.

Just over a week ago, the Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OTA file was discovered. Typically, that’s a sign that an update is going to start moving out. And while some Nexus 7 2012 users have received the update, the Nexus 7 2012 OTA is rolling out very, very slowly. We still haven’t seen it arrive on a couple of our Nexus 7 2012 variants and Nexus 7 users are saying that they have yet to see an Android 5.0.2 update. Here’s where things get interesting.

There are some Nexus 7 2012 users who say that they’ve yet to see the Android 5.0 Lollipop update at all. In other words, they’re still on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. This, almost two months after the roll out began. It’s a strange predicament and one that could change once the Android 5.0.2 OTA starts rolling. We just don’t know when that will be because Google hasn’t said anything official about the roll out.

Also strange is the fact that we’ve yet to see Android 5.0.1 Lollipop arrive for the Nexus 6. We’re still not sure why that is but there’s a chance that Google could be cooking up more Android 5.0.2 Lollipop updates.

Again, Google typically stays quiet about its testing behind the scenes so at this point, we’re still not sure where the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update will head to next. Nexus 7 users on Android 5.0 and Android 4.4.4 KitKat simply need to remain patient, or, install the update manually.

Sideload Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Right Now

If you haven’t seen the OTA update yet, remember, you can sideload the software on your Nexus 7 2012 right now. We put together a guide for the Nexus 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update that applies here. You’ll just need to substitute the Nexus 4 with the Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi and the Nexus 4’s Android 5.0 file with the Nexus 7 2012’s Android 5.0.2 Lollipop file. If you need another resource, check out Droid-Life’s guide to sideloading.

Now, we only recommend sideloading if you have some experience sideloading. Sideloading software can cause problems on Nexus smartphones and tablets so you’ll want to be confident in your abilities before making the move. Most of you will want to wait for the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to arrive Over-the-Air (OTA).

Early Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Reviews

Nexus 7 2012 users currently running the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update are offering feedback on the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop upgrade. Some Nexus 7 2012 users are reporting that the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update fixed bugs and improved performance on the aging former flagship.

We’ve only seen a few Android 5.0.2 problems emerge though that could be because Android 5.0.2 Lollipop is limited to just a few Nexus 7 users. Early Android 5.0.2 Lollipop problems include a Sound Search issue in Google Play, random reboots on the Android 5.0, battery issues, and more.

My Nexus 6 has been on 5.0.1 for several weeks after receiving an OTA just after my Nexus 5 got it. So it’s out there . . .

Sound Search problem is definitely not related to 5.0.2. It has been reported on 4.4.4, 5.0.1 and other android versions.

I bought my wife and I nexus 5’s for Xmas at the google store (early December). We both have Kit Kat 4.4.4. Any idea when we will get Lollipop 5.0 OTA? Do we just wait for 5.0.2 or do we have to have 5.0 first? Confusing but not as bad as the Nexus 7. At least 4.4.4 is working fine on my nexus 5.

Me too :[ my guess is they are holding off on pushing lollipop out to anyone else until they have updates for the problems that people are reporting. It wouldn’t make any sense to push out a problematic update only to have more and more people call in to complain. 5.1 is being released in February so I’m thinking that’s the update that those of us will get who are stuck with kitkat.

I wouldn’t bother with Lollipop, it’s crippled my 2013 Nexus 7. I’m going to flash back to KitKat, as I’m fed up waiting for 5.0.1 update….

Received 5.02 update for my NEXUS 2012 today, January 5th, at least I thought I did… I clicked the install and nothing downloaded. Then I checked “about” for my tablet in settings and it said I still had Lollipop 5.0 and my version was current with no updates due.

I just received L5.0.2 today, Jan 13. I’ve noticed some control issues. Like, I don’t care if these are your personal photos, you must join Google+, if you ever want to see them again, issue. Or, I’m going to stick in every name and email address you ever touched and not let you delete any, issue. Get my drift, who’s in control, me or the big brother, G!

Tried 5.0.0 on my 2012 WiFi a few months ago and took me 2 days to recover fro the bootloader crash. Tried anther 3 times with the same problem. Stayed well clear since then.
Has anyone had any problems with 5.0.2
