After being teased for months and only available as a limited early developer preview for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, today Google has officially announced the all-new Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Android.

Google started things off with a quick teaser video yesterday hinting that Android 5.0 was coming, and teasing the name of the dessert-themed Android operating system, but we now have all the details as of early this morning.

Back in June Google released the “Android L Release” as a limited beta for developers, simply giving users a small look at what was coming soon to Android. Some of those being an all-new Material Design set of guidelines to make a unified and beautiful user experience for apps, games, and everything else. And now we have all the details after the break.

Android 5.0 Lollipop will debut with the brand new just announced Nexus 9 table first, then the Nexus 6 smartphone that is built by Motorola, and will be coming to the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Google Play Edition devices in the coming weeks.

However, Motorola has already confirmed that the new Moto X, old Moto X, Moto G, and Moto E will receive the updated to Lollipop. And the same can be said about Samsung, who’s confirmed they’ll issue updates out as quickly as possible for all their latest Galaxy devices.

Updates aside, lets talk about the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Before we get started, Google’s released a slew of videos showing off the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and a few other things, so check out the newest video below.

The theme here being Android is designed for everyone. “Be together, not the same.” It’s designed to work on an array of devices, of all shapes and sizes, from any manufacturer, and available around the globe for, well, anyone.

As we stated above, the first device to see Android 5.0 will be the new Nexus 9 when it arrives on store shelves around the globe starting on November 3rd. Pre-orders will be live on October 17th.

Google also confirmed users can expect to see Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Nexus 6, and it will also be pushed out as an automatic software update to the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Google Play Edition devices in the coming weeks. Surprisingly the Nexus 4 wasn’t on the list to receive the update. But we’ll be on the lookout for more details on the Nexus 4 in the coming days.

So what’s new? Lots of stuff. For one you can get started by heading to Android.com/lollipop-5-0 for more details, then check out the newly released Material Design website for a look at how Android 5.0 will operate on your devices.

Nexus-9-1

Android 5.0 will be a complete visual overhaul to the Android experience. Everything looks slightly different with bright colors, interactions, animations and effects. It will be a very personal and fluid experience that powers screens big and small. From your smartwatch and tablet, to your car.

Content will respond to your touch in an intuitive way with animations and visual feedback, giving users an easier and better experience. And colors will all change as you interact with your device. Google’s actually released over 5,000 API’s that developers can access and build into their apps to make the Android 5.0 OS (and all apps) one cohesive experience.

Android 5.0 introduces a new Power Saving mode similar to what we’ve seen from Samsung and HTC in the past, delivering hours of usage with a tiny bit battery when you need it most, it’s more secure than ever and even has guest mode (for phones and tablets) to offer up different sign-ins. Think work, casual, and even one for the kids.

There’s a new do-not-disturb mode where you can select not to be disturbed by notifications. This is customizable from hours of the day, location, to even select contacts so you’ll only get alerts and notifications from friends, family, or loved ones if you choose. The choice and power is yours with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Device sharing allows for the guest mode mentioned above, but there’s a new “Screen Pinning” function where you can share a screen with other Android 5.0 devices and let them access that screen, but not mess with anything else. This will be great for work and collaboration.

Notifications and the notification pulldown bar has been completely revamped, along with the quick settings menu giving you access to the settings you need the most, without the hassle of going through settings menu after menu, and much much more.

Android 5.0 Lollipop supports 64-bit computing, and the new ART (Android Runtime) that was experimental with Android 4.4 KitKat is now officially the runtime of Android 5.0. This promises a faster and smoother experience, better battery life, and up to 4x faster and better performance across the board for all ART compatible apps. Which all should be sooner rather than later.

Over 68 languages are supported with Google adding 15 to the latest Android 5.0 release. There’s tons of details so be sure and check through everything that’s new right here.

As a bonus Google is already teasing Android Muffins, Android Oreo, and a few other names that will follow the Android 5.0 Lollipop release.
