Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Confirmed

Published

on

The next version of Android Lollipop is Android 5.1 Lollipop and it appears that Google’s already pushing out the next big Lollipop update. Furthermore, it appears that a Nexus Android 5.1 Lollipop release is in the cards for the future as its expected to land for Google’s Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9 at the very least.

At the end of last year, a single Android 5.1 Lollipop rumor emerged. The rumor indicated that Google would be rolling out another extensive bug fix update for Android users and one that would bump the version of the software up from Android 5.0. In the weeks since, there was nothing but radio silence but Android 5.1 Lollipop has exploded onto the scene in a big way today.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update is confirmed thanks to Google and thanks to a series of reports from Android Police. Google’s latest Lollipop update appears to be rolling out in Indonesia to Android One variants bringing at least one major change to owners of those devices. The rest of the changelog remains unclear at this time given how new the update is.

Google’s own website doesn’t list any specific information for this mysterious Android 5.1 Lollipop update either leaving the company’s next big Lollipop update shrouded in mystery, at least for the moment.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update was rumored to be a massive bug fixer capable of smashing many of the Lollipop problems that Nexus users saw after the arrival of their Android 5.0 Lollipop update last year.

  • Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0
  • General improvements in system stability
  • Improved RAM management
  • Fixes for sudden app closures
  • Improved battery management
  • Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed
  • Issues with wireless connections fixed
  • Problems with Okay Google function solved
  • Notifications problems solved
  • Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed
  • Other improvements and changes

The one big change that’s been discovered is the ability to change Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections from the Quick Settings menu. This will allow Android users to quickly change settings without leaving an application. Given that this is a major jump, we expect Android 5.1 Lollipop to have a whole lot more under the hood though we anticipate most of the changes coming in the form of bug fixes.

Google still hasn’t made a major announcement so it’s not clear where it will be heading next. According to Android Police, it appears that Google is at least testing the Android 5.1 Lollipop update on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9 though it’s not clear when the company might push the update out. Builds for other Nexus devices have yet to surface though we suspect that it will land for more than just those three devices.

Currently, Google’s Nexus devices are running two different versions of Android. Some Nexus devices including the Nexus 5 are running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, a bug fix update that rolled out several weeks ago to address lingering Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. Others, including the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, are running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, a newer bug fix update that also addresses Android 5.0 problems.

If and when Google decides to push Android 5.1 Lollipop to Nexus devices, the update will appear first in the company’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) before moving out Over-the-Air. What this means is that Nexus users will receive some warning before the Android 5.1 Lollipop push begins. Given how big of a jump this is, we could see Google itself announce the start of the roll out in the near future.

For now though, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update remains limited to the Android One series in Indonesia as Nexus users and other Android users continue to linger on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and below.
