Any Questions for Companies at CES?

Published

on

I’m going to meet a bunch of industry reps today and thought it’d be useful to pass along questions from the GBM community. Do you have a burning question about anything you’ve seen announced at CES? Just drop your question in the comments below and we’ll do our best to have them answered. Please start your comment/question with the name of the company you’d like us to talk to.

When you talk to Tablet folks (who are they these days?) like Lenovo and HP ask them what digitizers they are using. Do they work well with Stylus? Capacitive? Resistive? Why still in resistive mode? What’s going on with digitizers?

    Here’s one.

How is Iomega with their iConnect product able to do MORE than pogoplug/cloudengines for LESS money? It would seem at least that this product represents a 30%+ discount in pricing (and IMHO) one of the best values out there for functionality AND offer additional sometimes costly features from a hardware and software standpoint – the addition of the WIFI bridge/integration all at a lower pricepoint.

I also thing their other new product, vClone is going to be a real winner.!

I agree with Warner. In particular, whether inking is capable on the several devices that have been outed with capacitive screens. I know capacitive capable styluses (styli?) exist, but the ones I’ve seen don’t look like they’d be any good for actually writing. I’d be interested to know how much Windows 7 can compensate for a capacitive screen.

Ask Asus when will the Eee PC T101MT be available for purchase in the US.

    Thanks.

While I understand it is unlikely, if you speak to the Entourage Edge folks: what are the capabilities for productivity and PIM on the one screen? Will you be able to access Google Calendar for instance? What are the data entry input methods? Will it have self-contained apps for calendar, contacts, an email client? If so will calendar and contacts sync to the cloud via Google or some other mechanism? Will the other screen handle pictures and video (ie can I dump photos or video from a flash card and upload them to Flickr from this device?)

For everyone making slates: Will the various slates support inking and handwriting recognition (more concerned about the former; simply being able to take inknotes). Will any of the android slates support inking?

The thrust of both questions is, for slate-style devices (and I am interested in the slatePC-eReader hybrid), which ones will I be able to be productive on while on the go, and at least do PIM and Blogging, and which ones will I be able to keep my digital inking notebook in a la MS One Note for jotting down creative idea o the fly? Thanks.

    Thanks.

Ask vendors of productivity tablets (not entertainment focused “tablets”) if they will be offering screen sizes above 12.1″ wide-format, and/or resolutions above 1280 x 800.

I’m surprised to have not seen much from Acer. I’m curious about the Acer Aspire 1420P Tablet (or like models). Have they showed up at CES? Any clues as to when they will be released in the US or pricing? Thank you.

Good call Travis. I’d like to know when and how much for the Eee PC T101MT as well.

    1) What Warner said. In addition, please give us as much detail as you can find out about which devices are touch only (and digitizer type) and which are pen and touch.

    2) Will the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Have only one configuration as illustrated by the prototype? Is there any hope that there might be a version in which the detachable slate is more capable (i.e., runs Win7 or a comparably powerful OS)?

    3) Will the HP slate be available in only the one size, or can we hope for larger screen versions? Is it touch only? If so, how well will handwriting be handled, and does that make sense for a tablet with a full-capable OS?

    4) Is N-trig anywhere in evidence at the show? If so, any possibilty to talk to them on or off the record about user issues? Where is N-trig planning to go in the future?

    5) Same questions for Wacom and their recently-introduced pen and touch digitizer.

    6) Same questions for WeGo (…I think they are called…) and their digitizer.

What’s the latest on a capacitive wacom digitizer appearing in a laptop?
expanding on double-o-don, now that we’re seeing multitouch touchpads and lenovo and lenovo has put a touch screen on a 14″ laptop, so we know they make that size digitizier, are we doing to see any of the vendors like Lenovo and Dell start expanding tablet (touch and pen) into their larger models so it’s available to a larger population, users wanting faster systems with larger screens, but still wanting tablet capabilities.

Any info of the Lenovo x201 tablet or Dell XT3?

One question that bugs me concerning all the tablet pc vendors is if this tablet mania will bring down the price of their tablets (convertible and slate) or are they going to come out with lower priced units?

Can you ask OQO when they’ll be reintroducing the OQO 02 as nobody else seems capable of producing a similar device? I really miss my little baby since it died last year.

    About the new HP TM2:

    – Is the tablet able to register more than 256 pressure levels for the pen? What about (pen) tilt?

    – Is the capacitive sensor limited to tracking only up to two fingers or can it track more?

    – Will the older Tablet PC pens still work with the new GD-series digitizers?

    – Any plans on moving this to Core i3/i5 territory in the future?

    – Any plans to offer tablets with larger/increased resolution LCD screens?

Please ask Fujitsu if there will be a replacement for the U820 tablet.

Hell, ask Fujitsu if they’re ever going to update their line of Stylistic slates!

Talking about Fujitsu, are they planning on using a discrete GPU part any time soon?

What about Toshiba? Where are their TabletPCs?

Make an effort to get some hands-on time with the Light Touch Pico Projector and give us some user impressions!

Also, other than the Ni-Zn batteries that Sumocat has blogged about, have you seen any other batteries (external batteries or others) or other power sources that might enhance mobility?

How about that eternal Holy Grail, the fuel cell? Seen any of them at the show?

What Warner Crocker and Steve S have said.

    extra quetions:

    1. Will Lenovo continue to bring their price down on their Li-ion batteries? Will Lenovo be standardizing their laptop battery to one line for current and future models?

    2. Will the MSI dualscreen be the prequel to the courier tablet?

    3. Can any new or rumour be told on 2010 R&D and production for adequate stylus for current capacative screens for inking (e.g. iPhone, HTC HD2, android milestone)

    4. @microsoft: are developments on the way to improve the MS notetaking application (Sticky Notes), being able to save as a file and increased editing capabilities of notes and transfer them to the smartphone/pocket pc?
