Apple iCloud Could Get Photo Sharing Features with iOS 6

Apple could be preparing its own photo sharing service as part of iCloud.

According the The Wall Street Journal, Apple is planning to announce photo sharing services at WWDC next month. The feature will be part of an expanded iCloud, and will be a part of iOS 6.

The new photo sharing service would let iCloud users share photos presumably through email and social networks like Twitter. The feature will also let other iCloud users comment on the shared photos.

Apple currently has two ways to share photos on iOS. Users can choose to share photos on Twitter using the Twitter integration in iOS 5, or they can share Photo Journals through iPhoto for iOS. iPhoto Photo Journals use iCloud, but there’s no way for users to comment on them.

Before iCloud, Apple offered photo galleries as part of .Mac and MobileMe. Both had similar functions to Photo Journals, but they lacked the special layout of Photo Journals.

Other than Photo Journals, iCloud only handles images through Photo Stream which syncs photos between iOS devices, Macs, and PCs.

As 9To5Mac points out, the new photo sharing service could be another reason Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller left Instagram. He claimed it was because the service “jumped the shark” shortly after the launch of its Android app. Schiller wouldn’t need the service if Apple had a similar feature in the pipeline.

The WSJ story also confirms that Apple is planning on adding Notes and Reminders to iCloud this year. Those features seem obvious as both apps will come to OS X Mountain Lion this summer. iCloud seems like the natural method to sync the apps across all devices, and a web interface would make them accessible anywhere.
