Apple Rushing to Fix OS X Yosemite WiFi Problems

There are still many OS X Yosemite WiFi problems, but Apple is working swiftly on potential fixes for WiFi issues and bugs that continue to keep some users disconnected from the Internet after installing OS X Yosemite.

Shortly after the OS X Yosemite release date in October Mac users complained about a plethora of WiFi problems from random disconnects to total WiFi failures.

The OS X 10.10.1 update arrived in the middle of November to fix some of these WiFi bugs and other OS X Yosemite problems, but there are still users who cannot fully use WiFi on OS X Yosemite.

This week Apple shared the next potential fix for these OS X Yosemite WiFi problems. The OS X 10.10.2 update is still limited to developers, but there is one area that this bug fix update focuses on — fixing WiFi problems on OS X Yosemite.

Only developers can try the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 update at this time, leaving users to hope that this is better than the last update that Apple said, “Improves WiFi reliability.”

Over 100 pages of user complaints on the Apple Support Forum outline the trials and tribulations of users trying to find a fix for OS X Yosemite WiFi problems, but many users continue to report the same problems almost two months after the release of Yosemite and two weeks after OS X 10.10.1 arrived.

User hanumanthan explains the problem, which is essentially the same as the complaint that started this massive thread that already has close to 400,000 views.

“Wifi drops intermittently and takes huge time to connect. Had to turn off and turn on wifi to get back the connection.This is very predominant when i my mac goes to sleep and wakes up though it happens even when i am working.”

There is some hope that the OS X Yosemite WiFi problems are finally fixed with the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 beta. Ont eh Apple Support Forum Florian Innocente reports that early testing on the new beta is positive,

“I’m seeing some improvements with the new OS X 10.10.2 beta that just shipped.

I use 2 iMac mid-2011 at home & work and they both have constant drops in connexions.

Sometimes twice in a row. I spend my time switching off & on my Wi-Fi. It’s a bit early to say that Apple fixed the problem, but after 2 hours, I’ve had no problems with the iMac upgraded to the second beta of 10.10.2. Crossing my fingers…”

Although most of the users on OS X 10.10.1 are developers who joined earlier beta seeds, DougGJoseph reports that Apple invited him to try the beta because of his OS X Yosemite WiFi problems. This is not unheard of, but it does point to Apple rushing to get this fix in the hands of users who are not able to fully use their Apple computers. If you communicated with Apple, check your email for a message similar to the one below,

“You are invited to participate in the AppleSeed program and test a pre-release update to OS X Yosemite.  We received your name from the Wi-Fi Team.  We need your help testing Wi-Fi changes and trouble-shooting remaining issues.  If you accept, we will provide you with pre-release versions of OS X Yosemite updates to install and use. It took two weeks and two betas before the OS X 10.10.1 release arrived, so it is possible that Apple will be able to deliver the OS X 10.10.2 release date in mid-December. The exact timing will depend on the need for a second beta and any more testing, but it is clear that Apple wants to deliver a fix for this problem quickly.
