Asus Explains Lack of Rear Camera on Nexus 7

Published

on

Asus has explained why the Google Nexus 7 tablet doesn’t have a rear camera while many other tablets on the market do.

According to SlashGear, the company has released a Q and A on the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet and while many of the other questions have already been answered, the question about why Asus decided to leave off a rear camera on the Nexus 7 hasn’t been.

The company addressed the situation directly saying that the main reason why it didn’t include a rear camera on the tablet was because it wanted to keep cost down. The Google Nexus 7 is $199 for an 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB variant. Both prices are extremely competitive.

The Nexus 7 doesn’t have a rear camera.

Asus also says that many users would not use the rear camera, even if it were included.

“To make this device accessible to the widest possible market, price is very important. ASUS believes that for this device a good rear camera is important. Adding a high quality rear facing camera will increase the price point and many users would not have a use for it. Adding a lower quality rear facing camera would compromise on the overall user experience so the decision was made not to include a front facing camera therefore keeping the price down and user experience extremely high.”

So, if a rear camera was included on the Nexus 7, the cost of the device would have been higher. And if Asus wanted to keep the price low, it would have had to install a low quality rear facing camera which the company says would have drastically brought down the entire user experience of the Nexus 7.

Apple’s new iPad has a great rear camera although it’s unclear just how many people use it. Rear cameras on tablets, at least the way they are now, are fairly awkward for the user. That being said, it’s not surprising why Asus decided to leave it off.

Fortunately, the tablet does have one camera. Google’s Nexus 7 sports a front-facing camera for use with video chatting software like Google+ Hangouts and Skype.

I can except if adding a camera would raise the price of the device, if Google wanted to keep the nexus down, but to justify it and say most users won’t use the camera anyway, or to say a low quality camera would bring the user experience down is full of crap! Here’s why:

The iPad has never been known to have a decent camera. In fact there first gen iPad that came with a camera was the worst in the industry when compared to other tablets with Android that had a camera. Still, that didn’t stop Apple from sticking it in.

Next, as an OEM, don’t ever assume what, when, or how a consumer will use your product. If a consumer only has need to use the camera once the entire time they’ve owned their tablet, than it was money well spent. If that same consumer needed to use a camera on their tablet when other OEMs include it and yours doesn’t have one, than your tablet is inferior to those others that do have it and become less disariable.

What the f are you even talking about. No rear facing camera to keep price down. Plain and simple. No negative comments from guy who wants to argue usefulness of tab camera. Just shut it.

WOW!!! Mr. Jroc, You’ve added so much to this discussion and thread! You sound just like that rejected retard from napoleon dynamite, with your one to two sentence remarks and that low IQ response of “Just Shut it”. Isn’t there a hole somewhere in your life you can crawl back into and spare the rest of us with your lack of genius enlightenment? Oh, wait a minute… Before you respond back to this comment, make sure you’ve already thought of everything you wanted to say so you don’t look like an even bigger retard by posting a second comment to addend to your first comment…Duh!!

As to add to this thread.. I think my original comment stands on it’s own and explains my point abou the BS excuse of Asus explaining away the camera option for the back of the device. If you don’t get it, try finding a 3rd grader to explain it to you.

this is the reason why the nexus 7 tablet doesn`t have a rear facing camera, so you won’t look like an idiot. This link demonsrates it https://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/places-you-shouldnt-take-pictures-with-an-ipad

There’s a hack to put a rear facing camera in…there is a space for a rear camera and camera dedicated button. Look it up if you want one.

The fact that people are asking the question shows that they want a camera on the back.
