Asus Unveils eBook Reader: DR-900

Published

on

Asus took the wraps off of its eBook Reader called the Asus DR-900 at CeBit. Joining an increasingly crowded field, (with technology that might actually be yesterday’s news within a year or so) the DR-900 has a 9 inch display. The e-Ink device supports PDF, ePub and HTML formats on the 1024 x 768 res screen.

Asus is saying that battery life will probably allow for 10,000 page turns on a charge. There is integrated WiFi and optional 3G (hmm? Shouldn’t all of these devices have 3G embedded by now?) There is an SD slot to boost the storage from the onboard 2GB to 4GB range.

There should be some kind of connectivity embedded, and it’s time for color to become a standard, or maybe a premium at this point. I’m getting tired of seeing all these B&W e-readers. Bring on the color.

    1. Color is needed if e-readers are to take off for text book use.

    2. Easy connectivity is needed. With wifi at home, wifi at work, wifi at schools, wifi elswhere, tehering and the mifi to share 3g, embedded 3G may not be needed.

On another note, there have been complaints about the weight of some e-readers. If it replaces several 3 to 5 pound text books, an e-reader can be fairly heavy, if needed to accompdate a larger screen or battery.

If priced at $100 few would care about lack of color or 3g.
