Back in December, AT&T released its Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update through Samsung Kies, the software that allows Samsung device owners to update their devices manually through their PC. At the time, it appeared that Samsung Kies would be the only place that AT&T Galaxy S3 owners would be able to go to get the update.

Now though, it appears AT&T had a change of heart as the Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update is rolling out Over-the-Air to owners who missed the memo or gave up trying to install the update through Samsung Kies.

The AT&T Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update is now rolling out Over-the-Air.

The carrier confirmed the good news to Engadget and several Galaxy S3 owners have confirmed to Gotta Be Mobile that the update is indeed rolling out OTA at the moment. Galaxy S3 owners who haven’t received the update yet will want to head into the device’s Settings, into the About section and then Check for the update. If the update is there, and it should be, the software download will prompt.

The update is a big one which means that owners of the AT&T Galaxy S3 will definitely want to set aside some time for the update to prepare for installation and shortly afterward, instal itself to replace Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The software that is rolling out is not Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. And while Android 4.2 might be the latest version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.1 is still a big upgrade over Android 4.0.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings a number of improvements from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich including a new Browser, a faster and smoother user interface, an improved Camera application, better widgets and much improved Notifications. It will also bring Google Now to the table as well.

I just tried to upgrade my Galaxy S3 to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 but no luck. My carrier is AT&T and it looks like they have not released the software OTA yet. I went to settings, about, software update, checked for updates but it is still not available. I guess I’ll just have to wait.

I have ATT. Got a notification Monday morning that there was an update available and not to leave wifi. I started the process and it took an about 1 1/2 hours. Soooo much better. Until this update I was regretting switching from my S2 to the S3. I had no idea it was available through Kies. Although I’ve never had much luck with Kies as it seems very buggy and a pain to use.

Just did the update. Woke up to a notification on my phone for a software upgrade. Took about 20mins to completely upgrade. So far so good.

I actually updated my phone via Kies and found that the update interfered with the GPS function. The GPS would work for a while ant then lose lock and display a “Searching for GPS” message forever. I’d reboot and it would work for a while and then the same thing would happen. Many others also experienced this problem. Does the OTA version have this fixed? If not, I’ll stick to ICS.
