AT&T Windows Phone 7 Handsets Won’t See NoDo Update until End of April

Bad news for AT&T’s Windows Phone 7 handset owners as Microsoft has confirmed that the LG Quantum, Samsung Focus and HTC Surround still need additional testing before they get the NoDo update which means the update likely won’t roll out until the end of April.

Windows Phone 7 Updates

Last we heard from the AT&T devices was at the end of March when they entered the ‘Testing’ phase on the ‘Where is my update?’ website that Microsoft maintains in order to alert WP7 owners to NoDo developments.

This week, instead of a change from ‘Testing’ to ‘Scheduling’ as was expected, the devices will instead remain in ‘Testing’ for the foreseeable future. Of course, Microsoft’s page still says testing will end in early April but it’s the 13th and we’re essentially in mid-April now.

Once Microsoft updates from ‘Testing’ to ‘Scheduling’, it’ll still be around two weeks before the update gets out, so thus, we’re looking at the end of April as a viable time for the update to roll out to AT&T handsets.

Of course, Microsoft’s Eric Hautala who is the GM of Customer Experience Engineering expects to have more info soon, but we’re not exactly sure what soon means at Microsoft. The company had promised to get this update out to Windows Phone 7 device owners in March but we’re now approaching the beginning of May.

I’m not sure who to be the most dissappointed in with reference to the NODO or ANY update coming out for the WP7 phones.

I realize that the carriers have their own ‘loading’ or ‘disabling’ they like to do, like the face detection that is a part of the specs for the Focus – where is it? Different carriers have different computer servers so it’s likely that there will be different roll-out methods, different tracking methods, and so forth.

Yet, everything coming from the internet is speculation. And everything I don’t hear is vapor and vacuum. I’m tired of the speculations and I’m tired of the carriers being so bloody tight lipped.

Has anyone actually talked to the programmers? The testers them selves? What do THEY have to say are the issues? Is there a problem with the firmware? A problem with something AT&T wants or doesn’t want? Are we having problems with our ASCII/Octal conversions? (I realize the latest generation of programmers don’t even know what octal is, so don’t flame me about that comment.) What REALLY is the hang-up?

It’s like getting my car fixed. Don’t keep it in the shop for a month changing a spark plug, each day telling me that “We’re testing it to make sure we got it right,” without at least telling me what the heck is wrong!!

No software update and only one “approved memory (8mg) chip” available for the Focus phone. I bought my phone in October 2010. 7 months of disappointment for anotherwise great product.

How do we even know it will be out at the end of April if the update is in testing for the foreseeable future?

I think, AT&T should allow their Windows Phone 7 consumers to move on to other carrier without charging contract early termination fee. As consumers cannot wait for their never ending testing. Alternatively they should provide free upgrade to other handsets to have consumers move with the time and technology. MS WP-7 seems an outdated phone already when Android2.3 is about to roll-out with 3D technology.

I got sick of waiting for those bozos to roll out the update so I updated my Samsung Focus weeks ago with both updates back-to-back with no issues at all.

BTW, you may have to do some tinkering with your phone, download a couple programs to a PC, and sideload some stuff onto your phone but I think if anyone with modest computer proficiency will be able to do it themselves in about 30 minutes as long as the instructions are followed
