AT&T’s 1993 Predictions

Published

on

Microsoft’s 2019 predictions got a lot of play a short while ago and deservedly so. ComputerWorld dredged up a series of AT&T’s ads from 1993 from the ““You Will” campaign. 1993 doesn’t seem so long ago, but in tech years it was a long time ago. (As the article points out the Web was only four years old.) Some interesting perspective and context.

It’s pretty wild how many of those did come true. Wireless beach front internet, on demand tv, gps with traffic avoidance, automated tolls, libraries with ebooks. One thing I thought was funny was the video phone booth, it’s not that video communication didn’t happen, but that the phone booth has all but gone extinct due to the proliferation of cell phones.

At least AT&T did have some role in this all due to its cellphone business. Otherwise they were missing in action.

Funny.. Almost all of them have become reality .. or close to it… with the exception of Portable Medical Records. So everything else has a much higher priority than your health. huummm!
