Bill Buxton on Natural User Interface
Long Zheng of istartedsomething links to the this video of Bill Buxton talking about the Natural User Interface. It’s worth a look-see. Apparently Mr. Buxton gave a presentation at the conclusion of Mix10 Conference on what the natural is in Natural User Interface and this video talks about the same thing.
There’s some fascinating stuff here including how when we write with a pen/stylus/etc… we are also using touch to do so.

It’s all pretty cool. I was particularly fascinated by the demo using carbon paper. I’ve been using tablet PC’s for years, and – however great the handwriting recognition – I’ve always felt that there was something off or missing when using such otherwise fantastic tools as OneNote, Windows Journal, or InkSeine. I would never have thought of the kinetic dimension to handwriting; this has been a real eye-opener.
This kind of close attention to detail will drive a whole new generation of less frustrating technology. Now if only such research were allied with open standards, so that the consumer isn’t condemned to purchase all of his/her gadgets from the same ecosystem !!!

Interesting demo, but WRT moving the device to pan/zoom the display and then holding it there to view, that would get old quickly. I certainly want to find a comfortable position to hold the device and not have to hold it in many different positions to read.

It’s a great idea, but I have a visceral feeling that having to wave my arm around is less desirable to navigate an image than using finger manipulation.
The other applications seem to be very worthwhile though. Well done Bill!
