Black Hatters to Demonstrate Method of Hijacking Your Phone with SMS

blackhatI guess it is a good thing that there are Black Hat conferences where folks show off the techniques that they have discovered to hack into various systems. If folks make a living trying to hack in to systems and be destructive, it only makes sense that folks can make a living trying to stop them, and the companies that leave the doors open. Hopefully it has the desired intent.   Some are saying that   Microsoft’s latest patches that were off the regular Patch Tuesday schedule were timed to precede this weekend’s Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas.

Coming up this weekend, hackers are prepared to demonstrate how to essentially take over your cell phone with SMS. Most of the focus is on the iPhone, but other phones are going to be subjected to similar tests as well.

Using a flaw they’ve found in the iPhone’s handling of text messages, the researchers say they’ll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device’s camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.

Apparently the only way to prevent this is to turn off your phone, and I’m sure we’ll hear more about this on Thursday when they unveil their deep dark secrets.

I installed those Microsoft patches last night thinking they were leftovers that didn’t take.

There’s already cell phone “snooping” software available.
From what I understand, you can remotely listen to conversations(both sides), download all numbers incoming/outgoing, monitor text messages, remote view via the camera, remote listen via the mic, view their contact list, view the files/progams stored onthe phone

Hey, if someone really wants to read my text messages, more power to them… anyone who truly finds my conversations interesting, informative, or even entertaining has got the worst life EVER.
