BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz & Armor Review: Case-free iPad mini Protection

Published

on

The iPad mini cases we’ve played with to this point don’t get us too excited, so we decided to look for a way to safeguard it without a case and found two great options from BodyGuardz, the Armor Carbon Fiber skin and the ScreenGuardz Premium Glass Screen Protector. They won’t stop the iPad from breaking in a fall or when something huge falls on it, but they will keep the screen and soft aluminum free of scratches.

The BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure Premium Glass Screen Protector, made with tempered glass, protects the iPad mini display better than cheap plastic screen protectors. We’ve used glass screen protectors from other companies on the iPhone and a Samsung Galaxy S4 with good results and use anything less.

To install the screen protector clean the iPad mini screen with the included lint-free cloth and alcohol wipe. We don’t recommend using alcohol wipes regularly, but for this one time it cuts away the grease from fingers quickly and helps the protector adhere to the screen.

The BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure Premium Glass Screen Protector comes with a pair of suction cups to make applying the protector easier. Tear off the thin plastic layer of protection and then carefully place the glass protector over the iPad mini. Make sure to space the home button and the edges of the iPad so it goes on properly.

Use the included cardboard squeegee to push the bubbles to the edge and out from under the screen protector. Getting the bubbles out proved difficult, but they disappeared on their own over time.

BodyGuardz includes some raised button protectors for the home button. We applied it carefully and still struggled to put it on straight.

The BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber skin looks great on the back of the white iPad mini. BodyGuardz sells them in black, red and white. Applying them can prove challenging.

We cleaned the back again and then carefully attached the Armor to the iPad making sure to space it over the buttons, ports and camera. It took a couple of attempts to get it right.

Below, see the results. We really like how it looks and feel more comfortable carrying the iPad mini without a case. The skin safeguards the edges and backs from getting dinged or scratched.

The Armor does a nice job of fitting around all the ports, buttons and camera. Users can keep the Apple logo covered or remove the part of the skin to show it like we did.

People needing a lot of protection should stick with a traditioanal case. Since we carry ours the pocket of our computer bag most of the time, we like this solution instead.

The BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure Premium Glass Screen Protector sells for $59.95 direct from BodyGuardz. The Apple iPad mini Armor Carbon Fiber Skin costs $29.95. Together they cost more than most iPad mini cases, but we like how thin and light the mini feels with these protectors.
