Call of Duty Points: 7 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

In late 2015 Activision announced Call of Duty Points, a new in game currency for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 that allows gamers to purchase Supply Drops. This is a source of frustration for some gamers especially with the new Black Ops 3 DLC guns and weapons that may give some gamers and edge.

This will explain what Call of Duty Points are, what you can buy with them and if it is a way to make you a better Black Ops 3 player. We’ll also look into free Call of Duty Points offers and if buying Call of Duty points offer a better chance at getting new Black Ops 3 weapons in Supply Drops.

Activision is on a streak of adding micro-transactions to games and while Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 did not ship with a way to buy in-game items, it is now possible to pay for Call of Duty Points.

Call of Duty Points are available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. You cannot buy Call of Duty Points on Xbox 360 or PS3 even though these systems support the multiplayer experience.

You can continue to play Black Ops 3 without buying Call of Duty Points, but there are some options that open up if you pay Activision more than the initial purchase price. Here’s what you need to know about Call of Duty Points for Black Ops 3.

What are Call of Duty Points?

Call of Duty Points, or CP, are a universal currency in Call of Duty. Right now CP are only available for Black Ops 3 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. You can buy in-game items with them, which can customize your gear, unlock other in-game content and buy Zombies items.

How Much do Call of Duty Points Cost?

You can buy Call of Duty Points from the Xbox Live Store, PlayStation Store, various retailers and the in-game store inside of Black Ops 3 on the PC, Xbox One and PS4. There are also some options to buy online from your computer. No matter where you buy Call of Duty Points you will pay the same price.

Call of Duty Points range from $1.99 to $39.99 and higher value packages include bonus points. The table below outlines how much each pack costs.

PriceCall of Duty Points
$1.99200
$9.991100
$19.992400
$39.995000
$74.999500
$99.9913000

So far there are no sales, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a retailer like Amazon, GameStop or Best Buy offer deals on Call of Duty Points with the purchase of the game or in a future Black Ops 3 deal.

Occasionally there are deals on Call of Duty Points from Activision or Supply Drop sales, but we’ve observed that this happens before new items are added, so you may want to wait.

How to Get Free Call of Duty Points

Everyone can get 200 free Call of Duty Points by logging into Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on PC, Xbox One or PS4 for the first time.

Free Call of Duty Points are available for all.

The free points will appear on your account as part of the introduction of these new micro transactions. This is a small gift, but it is also a ploy to get gamers used to spending the in-game currency to unlock items and specials.

Beware of Other Free Call of Duty Points Deals

There are a lot of websites and YouTube videos proclaiming glitches and hacks to get you free Call of Duty Points.

Most of these require you to sign up for a bunch of services and apps to earn credits that you can turn into points. While there is a chance that some of these are legit, we generally recommend not providing your personal information or installing third-party iPhone apps just to get points that may or may not arrive.

Other sites claim to offer Call of Duty Point hacks and Call of Duty Point glitches to get you unlimited points. Given the amount of money publishers make on in-app purchases like this, it is unlikely that any of these will work.

What Can You Buy with Call of Duty Points

There are three places you can user Call of Duty Points in Black Ops 3; the Black Market, Dr. Monty’s Factory and unlocking Extra Slots.

The Black Market is something gamers already use with Cryptokeys. Users can purchase a Rare Supply Drop. A Rare Supply Drop includes a better chance at Legendary and Epic items. Supply Drops include;

  • Specialist Heads and Bodies
  • Weapon Camos
  • Taunts
  • Attachment Variants
  • Calling Cards
  • Emblems and Decals

A Rare Supply Drop is 30 Cryptokeys or 200 CP. You cannot buy a common Supply Drop with CP.

In Dr. Monty’s Factory  you can buy Vials with Call of Duty Points. Three vials coast 200 CP. Gamers can use this to create GobbleGums with a greater chance of a Rare or Ultra Rare GobbleGum when you use two or three vials. The video below explains this in more detail.

The final place you can spend CP is in the Create A Class area where you can spend 300 CP to unlock extra slots to customize classes. By spending 300 CP you get five more classes, bumping you up to 10 slots.

This also adds slots for Emblems, Paintjobs, Gunsmith Variants, Screenshots, Films and Custom games.

Can Call of Duty Points Make Me a Better Player?

One major concern about adding micro-transactions to games is that they can give gamers who want to pay more money an edge over the average game.

Recently Destiny came under fire for offering a way to pay to level up a player and skip earlier missions, and gamers are certainly concerned that Call of Duty Points will change the multiplayer experience.

In Black Ops 3 multiplayer, the only things you can unlock with Call of Duty Points are visual upgrades.

In Black Ops 3 multiplayer, the only things you can unlock with Call of Duty Points are visual upgrades.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer you cannot use Call of Duty points to become a better player. These points only unlock visual customization options. Additional Create a Class slots may allow some players to carry a wider range of weapons into battle, but for the most part this is not going to make someone a better Black Ops 3 player. Notably, you cannot pay to unlock the best Black Ops 3 weapons or new specialists.

One area where Call of Duty Points can give someone an edge is in Black Ops 3 Zombies mode. You can buy essentially unlimited vials that you can turn into GobbleGum, gaining an edge in Zombie matches. This can help someone go further into a round and may impact the leaderboards.

Do Call of Duty Points Offer a Better Chance of Weapons?

After the new Black Ops 3 DLC guns and weapons arrived in 2016 we heard from players who wondered if buying Call of Duty points meant a better chance at getting the new guns and melee weapons. Activision states,

“No, the probability of obtaining Supply Drops items and GobbleGums remains the same, regardless of whether COD Points were spent to obtain them. COD Points do not affect core progression.”

While you may be disinclined to believe Activision we’ve not seen anyone offer evidence that compares the probability of unlocking a new Black Ops 3 gun or melee weapon, showing a benefit to buying Call of Duty Points.

New Black Ops 3 Gun - HG-40

There are two new Black Ops 3 guns in the March Black Ops 3 update that arrived on March 21st. You will need to install the latest hotfix to turn on the new guns in the Black Market.

The HG-40 is a reskinned MP-40, which is a popular weapon from World at War. This is a SMG that has already made an appearance in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies mode.

Watch the video above to see the HG-40 gameplay in action so that you can see how it handles. The gameplay footage includes commentary that calls this "phenomenal" and shares that it plays just like the MP-40.

The official description is, "Full-auto submachine gun. Blitzkrieg your enemies and protect your squad with the versatile weapon that packs a punch."

Long Barrel and Extended Mag are very useful HG-40 attachments.

If gamers take the bait and spend cash on these stupid points then Activision will continue to put the wretched things into every game. Don’t buy COD Points. Resist the temptation. Hold onto your hard-won funds and use them to buy games that don’t rape your wallet!
