Can the HTC EVO 3D Succeed where the Nintendo 3DS Couldn’t

Published

on

The HTC EVO 3D is expected to arrive son on Sprint with a glasses free  3D display and dual 5MP cameras capable of shooting 3D video. The phone is building a lot of Buzz due to the ability to experience 3D on your phone instead of being limited to your HDTV with a pair of glasses.

Given the lackluster launch of the Nintendo 3DS, which also uses glasses free 3D technology, will the EVO 3D be able to deliver a usable 3D experience or is it just a gimmick that will be shown off to friends the first week and then promptly forgotten?

What’s Wrong with Glasses Free 3D?

Glasses free 3D can work; if you hold the device still, flat to your face and 12 inches away. These limitations have caused issues for some Nintendo 3DS owners and will likely continue to be a problem due to the way the glasses free 3D works. If you can hold the 3DS still right in front of you, the 3D works, but if you are in car, riding the subway or moving in any way, you may have these same issues on the HTC EVO 3D.

Nintendo 3DS

When the Nintendo 3DS launched, a number of users were posting about nausea and headaches from the glasses free 3D display, but these reports seem limited to a small number of users. The Nintendo 3DS has a slider that allows users to adjust the 3D effect and Nintendo suggests frequent breaks in usage while playing 3D games.

What Type of 3D Experience to Expect on the EVO 3D?

The EVO 3D will include 3D Android games including Splinter Cell 3D, which you can see around 12:30 in the clip below. During our hands on, the 3D effect was more pronounced on the 3D gaming than on the film.

When you are looking at the 3D images taken on the phone, there is still a some work to be done. You can see at about 14 minutes in what the photos currently look like and notice the issues if you aren’t looking directly at the EVO 3D, similar to issues with the Nintendo 3DS.

What About 2D Content?

The good news is that the phone has a beautiful qHD 4.3″ display that delivers an amazing quality experience in 2D mode as well. This is one way that the EVO 3D may be able to avoid the issues that plagued the 3DS.

When you are making calls, surfing the web and responding to email there is no need for 3D, unless you want to pretend you are on CSI.

Will the HTC EVO 3D Succeed?

For now, we will have to wait and see, but the early results look like the EVO 3D has a chance to succeed where the 3DS has had issues. The EVO 3D has the benefit of primarily being a phone that does 3D, rather than primarily being a 3D gaming device.

We expect that most users will be using the HTC EVO 3D in 2D mode while on the go, switching into 3D mode when they get to an office or hotel to watch a clip or play a game. The inclusion of a 3D camera and ability to play over 3D at 720P to your compatible HDTV is also another big plus.

We expect to see the HTC EVO 3D this summer, possibly as soon as May 25th for $200 to $300.

“If you can hold the 3DS still right in front of you, the 3D works, but if you are in car, riding the subway or moving in any way, you may have these same issues on the HTC EVO 3D.”

I play it everyday on the Subway train, even standing holding onto a poll sometimes. Its never been a problem. Even in extreme cases where I look the other way to see who around more or I get bumped by another rider, the 3DS syncs back up when I look at the screen. And really, I have held it anywhere from 3 inches to almost 16 inches away from me and never noticed a problem. It sort of reminds me of the DS phat LCD screen (or any older LCD) which if you turn it too far you loose the image. This article makes the sweet spot seem super narrow and its not.

Also really failure, it sold 3.6 million in the first month. The numbers it put up are pretty rare, so I would have been shocked if it sold out, knowing Nintendo shipped 4 million devices. I know sales have slowed down, I mean if it didn’t it would sell close to 40 million in the first year, and that is crazy, but I am still getting Street Passes often.

The only major issue the 3DS has is a lack of games, and the HTC suffers from all of the same viewing issues as the 3DS does. And they both have 3D sliders. I don’t see how other than better resolution, it makes 3D any better than on the 3DS. It’s basically the same hardware. Also, the 3DS is consistently being marked as a “failure”. Could you explain how a device that sold 3.6 million units in less than a month is a failure? It barely didn’t meet incredibly High expectations, but it’s not some device that can’t sell like the Xoom.

    “Where the 3DS Couldn’t”

So the 3DS sells a million units and you consider that a fluke? The major titles releasing this summer will increase their hardware sales as most people are waiting for worthy titles to purchase. I myself have only bought DS titles to play in the meantime.

Every ‘flaw’ you placed on the 3DS is already covered by the slider so you can have a 2D mode with no issue. Also the upcoming update will give it a full blown browser which will give it a multitude of uses.
So much for it only being a gaming device.

Very biased writing. I much rather have my 3DS on full use while my phone has full charge in my pocket, doubt it’s just me thinking that way.

Josh, like previous posters, I believe that this article is not accurate, and the title is unfair.

It reminds me of giving sugar to humans and telling them that it contains all the necessary nutrients to survive. In other words, I don’t think it is quite right.

while we have to be compromised with 3D displays, i stay on 2D…
anyway, there is a 3D technology that works from any angle in a field of view, it’s developed in Hungary by Holografika (holografika.com)
