Carrypad weighs three slate contenders

Published

on

Ben at Carrypad puts the “Top 3 Big Slate Contenders” on the scales, weighing the iPad against the JooJoo and Notion Ink Adam. Seems to be a fair contest, in terms of tech. In terms of sales, well, let’s face it, there isn’t a slate out there that will compete with the iPad.

I think it’s fair to assume the JooJoo’s legal woes will be elephants tromping around the cargo hold of its ship. Maybe not enough to sink it outright, but all that heavy, shifting weight will keep it from sailing straight. Ben worries about the whiffs of vapor the Adam is giving off. Seems a valid concern, but I find it more likely that they’re promising too much, setting themselves up for a backlash of disappointment.

Regardless, the big deficit these and all other slates face when compared to the iPad is lack of hands-on, in-store interaction. We’ve been saying it for years: people won’t buy tablets if they can’t get their hands on them. There are exceptions to that rule (like me), but the ability to handle an iPad in the Apple Store (and presumably later in a Best Buy) is a monstrous advantage, especially given the openness of their display area vs. the locked-down approach of other retailers. In that regard, no other slate even comes close.

Fry’s electronics usually carry fujistu tablets. I remember when the Samsung Q1P was out, Fry’s had it. They also had the Fujistu U810. Would be nice to see if Fry’s would carry some of these tablets.

I’m definitely interested in Notion Ink’s Adam based on thier promises and worry about this mention of vapor. I think I need to see something from them soon so that my fears, and the fears of others, are allayed. That said, I’m still tha optimist!

I agree with you about the Notion Ink Adam. Looks amazing and the Android os makes it appealing as well. If the hardware works then it will be really great.

I was talking with someone about the distribution edge that the iPad will have. Big name, big possibilities. It will be like the Kindle vs the Sony…or worse.

From what I understand, none of these slates does ink. No ink…no go. That means you have to type your notes. I don’t know about you, but I write faster than I type.

Agreed on the “no ink, no sale” part.

I do type much faster than I write, but a keyboard is no good for non-plain-text information. Once I get some complicated math formula or diagram thrown at me, I’d rather not fumble around with paper-just jot it down in OneNote.

Even more oddly, though, if it IS plain text info, I still write it down in OneNote with the pen. Not quite sure why, but when I feel like taking notes, I want to handwrite them even with the speed penalty over typing them. The keyboard is more for typing up essays and Internet posts like this, not to mention operating Windows in general.

(I also don’t get how the Notion INK Adam can’t “ink” in the Tablet PC sense…)
