GBM Week In Review

Here is a quick look at some of the most popular articles from this past week:

On the Road and Mobile Again 2009: Part I

ontheroadHere we go again. The next four months feature most of my yearly travel adventures. Tomorrow morning my wife and I head out for the annual pilgrimage to her home town, Chicago. We do this each and every year and visit family and friends. But that’s just the beginning. From Chicago, I head out to Las Vegas for CES 2009 and then we return back home to Virginia.

Beginning the first week of February I’m off for the first of several audition conferences where I see actors and technicians who might be hired for our 2009/10 season at Wayside Theatre. I’ll be visiting Washington DC, Memphis, and Birmingham, Alabama on this year’s trip, as well as a possible trip to New York City, if needed. I think in April I’ll be heading out to a possible MVP Summit in Seattle, Washington in April, but I’ll have to wait and see how that goes.

Psion Responds about Netbook Trademark

wireless-internet-netbook-with-intela-atomac-processor-intelBack in the day (yeah, it was so long ago, like not even a year) when the machines everyone now calls Netbooks began rolling out like ants out of a mound smelling sugar, many of my posts about these devices contained what I thought at the time was a humorous jab at the confusion over naming conventions. I would start a post with “such and such a company has released their ultra-mini-low-cost-netbook, or whatever you call them.” Turns out there was some irony to be had in all of that.

Last week we got word through jkOnTheRun that Psion Teglogix, the company that owned the trademark on the term Netbook and Netbook Pro was issuing cease and desist letters to some fan sites that were using the now familiar moniker. Tonight, Kendrick reports that he’s gotten a response from Psion and he’s published it on jkOnTheRun.

A Christmas Wish List for Tablet PC and Mobile Geeks

christmas6 This is my annual Christmas Wish List of things I’d like to see for Tablet PC and mobile device users. Here’s a link to last year’s and the year before.) This isn’t a best of list, or a set of predictions (already done that) , nor is it a list of gadgets I’m looking for under a tree or in a stocking. Rather, these are things I’d like to see happen. As in year’s past, I’m an impatient old elf (no jokes, Matt) so I’d like to see these wishes sped along if you please.

So, take the jump and see what I’m wishing for. Feel free to chime in with yours as well.

2009 Predictions: Rob’s Take

Rob BushwayI love the beginning of a new year due to having a clean slate - anything is possible and the plains are wide-open.

Here is my best guess for what 2009 holds for us mobile tech enthusiasts: Continue reading

8 Tech Items to Regift

gift‘Tis the season to give gifts.  Finding a few items to regift has come in handy a few times that I’ve been in a pinch.  Regifting involves the redirecting of a gift that you’ve received, giving your gift to someone else.   Regifted items are usually selected because they’re relatively inexpensive or a surplus has already been collected.  Who needs 3 webcams anyway?

Regifting tech items used to be impractical primarily because of high cost and lack of device availability.  The game has changed now as supply has outpaced demand for many of the following items.  These tech treasures will come in handy if somehow you never find the time to take care of last minute shopping.  You might consider regifting the following items or even picking them up as stocking stuffers to keep the holiday cheer alive.

1) SD Card/USB Thumbdrive/Multi Card Reader: Who doesn’t have a drawer full of Continue reading

2009 Predictions: Warner’s Take

me Here we go with my predictions for what we’ll see, what we’ll talk about, what’ we’ll laud, and what we’ll moan about in the coming year. If I do say so myself, I did pretty well with my 2008 predictions, but that is no guarantee that I have any great leg up on what I’m sensing in 2009. After all, with the world still struggling to understand what the ramifications from economic news may or may not be, who really knows what we’ll be dealing with throughout the next year. The one prediction I’m sure about though is that by the end of 2009, there will be predictions for 2010.

That said, here we go (after the jump) with my predictions for 2009. Take ‘em or leave ‘em.

GBM’s HP Magic Giveaway Winner Passes The Magic Along

dscf0004-3When we launched our HP Magic Giveaway contest, we were genuinely hoping that the winner we picked would follow through on their promise to pass along the magic of giving. David Arpino, our winner in the HP Magic Giveaway contest, followed through on his promise. He’s been posting away in our forums about the prize package, playing with the HP TouchSmart (which he is keeping!), and yesterday presented all of his gifts ( and then some ) to The Restoration House, a non-profit ministry dedicated to helping single mother families.

Here is a picture of the presentation, a little writeup from David (there’s much more in the forums, so head over there), and a thank-you note from The Restoration House themselves. A huge thanks to HP, Microsoft, the Windows Live team, and Buzz Corps for helping make the lives of single mothers just a little bit easier.

2009 Predictions: Matthew’s Take

mattdBehold my predictions for the great, forthcoming year of 2009.  The following thoughts are what I’d like to see happen with a dash of what I believe will happen.  Gaze with me into the crystal ball:

Mobile Computing

  • The term “netbook” becomes a household name because many homes have adopted one or two as a second computer, child’s computer, or mobile companion.  Features, build quality, and battery life improve while price points still hover around $350.  More options for Continue reading

Netbooks, The Bottom, and Apple Speculation

me2MacWorld is around the corner, there are more rumors than in baseball’s Hot Stove League, and many of them are centering on whether Apple will enter the Netbook market or not. Intriguingly some of the speculation focuses on the device profit margins (or lack thereof.)

Scoring My 2008 Predictions

me1The end of the year brings scores of predictions and posts, columns, and reports on what we’ll see in the next year. We each do predictions here at GBM. I’m gearing up for my 2009 predictions, but first here’s a look back at my 2008 predictions to see how much of a predictor I really am.

Actually I don’t think I did  too badly.
